GT Brake Upgrade.

Featured Replies

Hey, just got a GT after my golf, loving it, but the brakes are crap!

I think the disks are warped, 'cos I can feel a shudder/vibration when braking hard, and I don't think the fluid's been changed in a fair while, but what obvious upgrades are there for them? with bolt on parts etc. G40/Golf?

Cheers

Rich

MK1 Golf GTi vented discs, which are the same as G40, and suitable pads in your existing calipers. You can also fit a larger bore master cylinder.

Yes.. I agree...

The brakes you need are VW TYPE II calpiers off a mk1 golf or G40.. They can be found on some MK2 golfs/sciroccos but are harder to find the correct ones.

The master cylinder is a 22mm one off a passat, which can be bought from VW, GSF or ECP for cheap.

I have this set up on mine and it makes a world of difference.

The GT I've broken has VW2 calipers. At least I'm sure that's what I read on the back of them. I'll have to have another look.

are the disks vented? Some VWII calipers houses vented disks, some dont. I don't know the difference though.

Don't assmue the discs are warped straight away. Loose arb bushes have the effect of juddering under braking.

buckled wheel, wheel not balanced, tracking/camber, as said it will most probs be the cakey front bushes, when i used to brake the car use to pull to the left, (brakes were fine) changed to G-ladersite bushes and the car felt solid !!

depending on what size wheels u have, go for the g40 brakes 22mm m/c, good pads/discs

and use super blue racing dot 4 fluid

check all bolts are tight on calipers and carriers also rub your hand on disc when cool to feel for a bump or blemish etc

grease the carrier sliders with red rubber grease not normal grease

should help with juddering

g40 brakes are pants too i need a bigger mastercylinder too
