I've gotta jack the front end up of my car as it has developed a strange humming noise when I accelerate

when I put the clutch down its still there possibly driveshaft/wheel bearing etc

but what I need to know is how do I jack the front of the car safely so I can check underneath

Haynes manual is a bit vague on this subject and don't want to have my polo sat ontop of me

How do any of you guys do it?

I own 1 trolley jack and 2 axle stands(if this makes any difference)

Thats all you need mate, jack up one side, put on axle stand then do the same with the other side....

If you look under the floor at the back of the front wheel arch, there's a big flat area. This is what I've used to jack the Polo on.

I used to untill the jack went through it.

I use a block of wood/rubber on the suspension mounts...

I rip my shirt off, then lift the car with one hand whilst positioning the axle stands with the other.

EDIT: and at the same time, satisfying my wife!!

Funny you should say that when I changed my rear axle I lifted the car up while my dad put the axle stands under... and no I'm not joking

Never mind cornflakes, you've had too much weetabix, mate!

that remind me of a funny story that happened to work my mate drives a gt mk 3 and i work at a diy store and the fortlift driver lifted my mate gt up on to a couple of plaites and when my mate walkedout to find hes gt seating in the air u cant explain hes face it was funny as feck he didnt now if it was funnny or not lol

that would of been so funny to see !!!

Sometimes I use the gearbox to jack it up on. Your not meant to, but it doesn't seemed to have harmed the car. All the mounts still remained good and tight!

I don't trust jacking up on the jacking points, always think they'll give way.

I use the anti-roll bar mounts mostly, if they've got to come off then I'll jack up on the mounts and put an axel stand under the jacking point.

I also put a steel wheel under the sill, just incase.
