I got a back bumper from a scrappy yesterday but its silver and my cars white, so what shall i do, hows the best way to sand it and paint it? i dont really have a clue?

Silver is fine as an undercoat for white,providing there's no damage to the new one.

I'd just wet-flat it with grade 400-500 paper,then spray it white. The first dusting of paint will still show the silver through,but by the third coat,there'll be no sign of it. Give it another three light/thin coats,wait two weeks,then rub it down with some rubbing compound,fit it to the washed car,then polish and wax it and the whole car.

Ok thanks MikeyMK, there is some little marks on it, but theyve been painted over. i was thinking of getting it done professionaly, because I'm no good at these sort of things.

any one know what sort of price i should expect if i do?

no more than £100 per bumper. i used to get my mk3 ones done for £120 for the pair but thats going back about 5 years!

Thinking about it now, how much would you say a full respray would be.

Is it a set price for any colour coz i was thinking of the purply colour that turns gold as you pass, flip flop

I've seen a mk4 like it in a magazine once and it had really wide arches, it was beautiful

for a flip paint job the paint is expensive and has to have more coats put on as there are different base coats to give that flip effect.

cheapest resprays will be in a solid colour as you don't need to clear coat them

metalics a little more.

i can get a decent respray for around £500 but thats from a guy who works on home for something to do as he's retired

If u want you are car painting in a pearl/flip colour the car would have 2 be painted black 1st in most cases because the car needs a dark under coat to filp and change the colour.

If u know a guy who can do a full repaint/ colour change for £500 I'm a painter il start takin my jobs to him and make abit of money through him. What u find is most of the time is guys who charge small amount for full repaints cut corners and the car will start looklin dull/rusting and lots of other things and the car will need doing again in less than a year. You pay for what u get and I'd say a good repaint starts from £800.

It all depends on who you know and where you go. You could be ripped off and pay £4k for a standard colour respray that turns out to be utter crap, or £500 for a quick blow over that actually turns out to be pretty good.

What do u class as a quick blow over. A blow over is a repaint

Sorry... By a quick blow over I mean that, as you say, just a repaint. I sort of meant to say that you could spend absolutely loads, and supposedly have the best prep work etc and it be shit.

My grandad was a bodywork and paint specialist, and he had a car come in once that had apparently had a bare metal respray 2 years previous and there were a few spots of rust coming through.

But he also gave his old Citroen XM a simple repaint with next to no prep work and it was fine up till 5 years later when he sold it on.

i understand. but u say u can get1 for a few pints and the cost of the paint but thats off you are grandad. i was talkin about going 2 a garage or to some1 you know who charges for paint work. i would do a respray for no less than £800 and the price goes up and up depending on car/colour they want/smoothing/fitting of kits/arch rolling. did a bmw 330ci not so long ago and rolled all arches and full repaint candy blue and charged £1400 and the guy was pulling his plod over it. so all i was saying was u pay for what u get.

i do pass jobs onto him and make money :)

he's retired but has built a garage on the side of his house to do work in he used to own and run a local bodyshop now does it for something to do

he did my car and compared tto the quotes i had it was about a quarter of the price others wanted

he's currently doin someones 9n polo off here who wanted there rear arches pulling out, :)

Its easy to blow over a car in the same colour - particularly a 3-dr hatch. Removing a few bits of trim is hardly labour intensive.

A complete re-colour requires a stripped shell to do properly,and is a completely different kettle of fish.

bring you are car round and il paint urs for nothing il remove a few bits and paint straight over it or should i say (give it a quick blow over) have u ever tried D.A.ing a full car down, then scotching it all, priming any little bits, masking up, painting it, then polishing a whole car properly leaving no flatting marks?

When i see you i will give you the number of a really good sprayer in Attleborough.

yes, i have, quite a few times, its not as dfficult as some people like to make out if you have the right gear....

Although i do know a guy who runs his own bodyshop and quoted me 350 quid for a respray on a corsa i had a few years ago, depends on where you live and competition too as to how much its gonna cost. This guy has had mag feature cars but that doesnt mean you need to pay thousands to get it right
