mk2 front and rear screen chromes

Featured Replies

My chromes on the mk2's front and rear screens are plastic and of course are very faded. I just wondered if anyone knew where to source them from, as i think they serve as part of the seal itself i can't just get some stick on chrome.

Any help appreciated, thanks :-D

Hey, you can still get these from vw, cant remember the part no, will try to find it, i got some for my derby for vw, its the same as on mk1 golfs etc.

can you get ones without the chrome strips? as i dont think i'll be having much chrome on my car, and they look out of place.

sorry to hi-jack the topic

cheers

i'd of thought they'd be easier to get hold of than the chromes, i think you need to get the whole seal though. there's a few down my scrap yard so if you have one local to you go and have a look :-D

cool, i do have a local vw one, with one saloon, and that has the chrome things. but I'm not sure i saw a polo coupe. need to go down there and get a boot lock so i will ask.

cheers

Can the chrome part not be prised out of the rubber?

Adam

i dont no, i was thinking about it, but have never tried. and dont really want to unless someone know's, dont want my windscreen falling on my face whilst driving along haha

I'll have a look on the weekend :p

 nice one

I need to take the screen out anyway to sort some rust so it doesnt matter if it falls out :p

rather you than me :smirk:

another question as you own a saloon, do you no if any other models have the same boot lock? i asked about a mk1 golf convertable boot lock, but apparently there not the same part number, but i jut noticed a scirocco boot lock looks similar (going of topic i know :paranoid: )

Ermmm don't know tbh! haven't had any trouble with mine (yet!).

i've been told that to remove the chrome trims you need a special tool

A screwdriver! I tried it today and it came straight out, but it leaves a gap so i put it back in (more difficult than it seems!).

did you pour water on over it to se if it leeked? whats your thoughts on it, did it look ok with the gap?

It didn't leak, but I can see it being a dirt trap.. I think I'm gonna go down the scrappy and get a hatch/coupe seal.

The chrome trim comes out of the window seals easily enough, just ask uncle steve! :) Yeah you can still get it from VW, the part number is 255 853 305 and it comes in 4m long rolls. I think you need about 2m for the back window and 3.5m for the front window but it's not very clear on etka so Id give the old stuff a measure first! :)

You cant fit this stuff to a car without the chrome already there as the rubber is different and no longer available (I checked :() You can however get some stick on stuff, Jimmy_B style! You might still be able to get new ones without the insert as they were still being used until alot more reecently

I think mk2 Sciroccos have the same boot lock.

i think the chromes push the rubber seal into place so if you just take it out it may leave the screen loose, so i've been told. and when i checked with the parts lads at my place they said the chromes were obsolete :?

Yeah you have to leave it in if you have that type of screen seal, It makes removing the screens alot easier if you take it out!

The Polo Part is obsolete but it there is another VW (T25 I think) that uses the same chrome inserts under a different part number, and these are still available.

i might just pop mine out and spray them black, as they look pretty dull. and i dont have any chrome on my car.

what do you think, spray them black? or red?

Hmm, not sure about red. You could try it and if it doesn't work, go for black?

Can you get non-chrome rear screen seals or did all 'loons have chrome in the rubbers?

arent the coupe and saloon rear windows the same? so surely the rubbers might be the same? and they dont come with the chrome strips. not sure though, just a thought, the seels mgiht be completely different

I'm sure they are different.. haven't been outside to check.. but the rear seals are completely different. Is the coupe glass flat in the rear window? The loon glass deffo is.

Surely u need a rear seal from a mk3 loon if you want to loose the chrome inlay.
