OK, so went to undo the driveshaft nut today and oh bugger its a little rounded...

Give it a couple of goes with my socket and no go (using one of those sockets that have lots of teeth not just nut shaped if you know what I mean), the socket just slips off.

Off to halfrauds I go, get a nice deep socket (nut shaped one). I get much better purchase on the nut but its soooo tight I end end just spinning the tyre (full weight of the car on it and in gear).

Get the Mrs to sit in the car and put the brakes on to stop the wheels slipping and the socket just pops off everytime.

I've whacked it, wd40'd it, Tried knocking it round with a hammer and chisel and nothing, it won't budge... Both sides the same. Whoever put them on last must have overdone it with the air gun, they should be very tight but not that tight.

Any body got any smart ways to get this undone? I thought a blow torch might help but I don't have one and I've already spent a fortune on tools this weekend.

So very annoyed, please offer advice

You are using at least a 3 foot breaker bar aren't you?

Also chock the wheel with a brick aswell as having the brakes on.

yep, big bar. Just can't get enough purchase on the nut. wheels were chocked too

Dude, they are generally 250Nm+, whacking it and WDing aint gonna do shit. As already said, get a big ass breaker bar, if the nut is cut in, make sure you prise the tabs out. And dont bother with a blow torch

A bit of heat will help when they are that tight.

yhh had the same problem with ma bro's mk 2 golf the driveshaft nut was sooo tight couldn't even get it to budge even after trying every little thing, so in the end i managed to get hold of an airgun and the thing just came off in a second, oh n also i tried heat and that didn't really do much either

Heat it up smack it with a hammer then whack a big breaker bar on and get your biggest mate to jump on the bastard. Thats what worked for me!

Mine was the same when doing my suspension, took it down to ats tires and he wipped it off with the air gun then just nipped it back up so i could drive on it.

Thats a thought. Might try that next weekend. Ran out of time yesterday and had to give up. Damn these polos are tough!

breaker bar and a length of scaffold tube, give it a good sharp shock dude.

I had the same trouble when chaning the suspension.. Did one side in like 30 secs.. Other side.. Tired everything.

I took it down to my local garage.. They tried the air gun, didn't work. Big bars.. Didn't work..

So I fetched my scaffold pole and used his big feck off snap on bar.. It took 4 big men to prise it off!!! No lies!!!

They did it for free tho!!! YAY!!

yeah I thought about that, but halfrauds don't sell imperial sockets. I actually went to buy a 29mm socket but they don't sell them either

what you want, is a half inch windy gun. i dropped my struts out today and couldnt get them of with a breaker bar, windy gun no probs

finally got these off.

Took it to ATS and they had them undone in about 5 seconds with an airgun.

Wish I had gone down there before

gave the guy a fiver just to keep him sweet for next time :-D

Haha me and MrP did this on mine today - my weedy 2ft bar was just bending, even with all 13st of me bouncing on it!

We ended up 'borrowing' a 20ft scaffold pipe to put over the breaker bar, i undid them both with hardly any effort - the bar alone was nearly enough!

i find the best way is to get a breaker bar with the jack handle on the end of it 4ft apx. then put the knuckle of the bar on the jack. this gives the person undoing both hands free to have a good jump on the end.

It took me and my dad (bout 28 stone in total) jumping up and down with a 5ft scaffold pole and a breaker bar, was a tight bastard
