I'm about to upgrade my laptop to a newer one, and this has led me to think about putting the old one into my car, and lose the old head unit (i never listen to the radio anyway). Obviously I wouldn't want it playing through the tinny speakers in the parcel shelf, so....

I was thinking about connecting the laptop to a 4-way Amp of some sort by a 3.5mm jack - RCA lead, with the rears bridged to a subwoofer in the boot and the fronts to components in the front doors.

I don't want huuuuge bass or top sound quality, I just want to be able to hear what's playing :p All parts would be budget / 2nd hand.

I know a fair amount about enclosures etc, but not about amps and components so is there anything else I need to think about or any other recommendations?

Back in the day when I had a mk2 I linked up a minidisk player with a long RCA cable to a cheap amp that I was given and a pair of sony x-plod 6*9s from argoss mounted in a home made stealth shelf.

Which incidently is for sale if you're interested. it's the 3-way speakers and built into 18mm MDF which weighs a lot but the speakers performed a lot better than in the flexiable standard shelf. It looks very similar to the original from outside the car, obviously until you lift the tailgate up. It's covered in black acoustic cloth under which some fairly heavy duty speaker mesh protects the cones. It's been stood in the corner of my room for 18 months now as I got a mk4! lol. Just bought a very cheap (£20) 4x75w amp off ebay. Now on the look out for a cheap sub (8-10") and components.
