basically, i want my car lowered for an upcoming weekend show and haven't got the cash for coilovers or a full suspension kit at the moment. i was wondering if i could put lowered springs on standard shocks (only for a week or so), and if yes how low can i go? I'm looking for a drop of about 60-70mm

i used to have a mk2 polo coupe lowered on just springs. it was fine. dampers will wear quicker tho but as your getting coilies what does it matter :-D

You can safely go down 40mm.

This is because the springs are pre-compressed at the damper's stroke. A standard damper has a longer reach,and if you use a shorter spring,the damper will not hold the spring.

A 40mm spring is long enough to be held by a standard damper,but a 60mm spring will be so short that it'll move about when relaxed (if you lift an inside wheel in a corner,elevate on a bridge etc) though people have done it,and survived quite happily.

I cant see most 50mm springs being a problem. But 60s are also very tight,and normal shocks (particularly old ones) wont be able to control the spring,and it'll be bouncy.

A budget set from Jackson Tuning only has a premium of circa £70 over springs alone,and its a ball ache of a job to swap suspension just once,let alone twice - if you can borrow £70 and fit a budget kit until next year,that'd be the best idea.

i would definitely say wait and stretch to a complete budget kit. mk3 suspension is bad enough to do once
