A Mk3 1500 G60 is born, Geoffrey's heart is in Geoffrey.

This engine conversion is fairly popular on the continent due to the availibilty of the 1W engine. Us over here just had to wait for the price of the vans to come down coupled with development/success of the 1341cc really. This guy on here over in Germany is doing the same setup as Sally, although i think he my be using the Sorg crank to gain a few more cc.

I've just remembered Tony Lo's car after reading this thread again (good work by the way guys!). 1.5 G60 in a black Mk2 GT-G40, think he used a Sorg crank though, but might be wrong. Not seen it at a show for a while, last I heard he was adding throttle bodies.

LOL, totally forgot about tony's car, think thats been a 1.4 for 7 or 8 years now? And with a g60 charger... haha quality, must e-mail him actually.

is the sorg a steel crank? i cant wait to get mine up and running, its gonna be soooo cool

Get...pictures... :unibrow:

Yeah i did know about that car, sort of inspired me getting my 1W last year. I have only ever seen it at Inters though. Is it a 1398cc or a 1473cc?

sorry for being silly, what engine isit? i thought g60's were a 1800??

it looks like a g40 engine with a g60 charger?

You are correct Original G60's are indeed 1.8 lumps

This engine is a diesel bottom end, with a G40 head, so it will look like a 1.3 G40 lump (slightly taller) this is coupled with a G60 charger.......& it's capacity is near as dam it a; 1500cc :unibrow:

The block is not taller, but as mentioned above it has oil squirters. If you put the 1W crank in a G40 bottom end you need to grind the block and rods to provide clearance for the longer stroke. 1W's also have bigger head bolts

once again if the 1.4 1w has the same size standard pistons as a 1.3 how does it gain 100cc .........smart arse ......the rods are the same and you have said it has a longer stroke .get your tape out please......

The fact that it has longer stroke, does not mean it has got to have a taller block. If you don't agree just look at the Golf/Passat blocks. The KR 1,8L has got the same basis block as the 2,0L 16v 9A. Only difference is bore and stroke............

Edit: Tony Lo's car is 1397cc. Uses standard G40 bore and 1W crank. He started out with a 1,4L Golf crank though

Wouldn't mind seeing pics of this car / engine if anyone's got some :-D

Especially if he did get it on TB's, I'd love mine on TB's one day

Interesting air box....

Like the mock up stage.......attention to detail there!!!

Hmmmm, very interesting. A little space saved thru not having to use a standalone tank for the charger (OK, I didn't 'have' to but I preferred to go down that route than get the block tapped for a return).

I presume that the piping from the charger goes along the front of the car to the cooler? I've still got to sort out the piping for the FMIC on mine.

Can't wait 'till I've got some spare cash again & I can start buying more pimp bits for mine ;)

Yeah I know he did, just commenting on the space saved by not having a standalone :-p

I like the FMIC I've got, seems really effective so won't be changing to a CC on mine.

I'm glad your keeping your FMIC because it looks so cool on the front of Geoffery 8-)8-)

Aw cheers honey. It'll be sat further forward than it was tho, a new mounting bracket has been made to help air get to the rad. :-)

this thread is to complicated for my little brain. interesting read though. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Well we finally had the 1W engine running in Geoffrey last weekend after sorting out the electrical gremlins

Got a couple of vids of it running....... 8-)

1st time the 1W ran

1st Drive of the 1W

Very windy vid out of window

I get the bad news over the phone

I wasn't at home for the first running and Dave phoned me up to tell me the bad news, I thought he was winding me up......but No! :crybaby:

Dodgy Tacho

Suspected Head Gasket

After limitted mileage we decided to stop the run due to suspected blown head gasket, we got it back home and confirmed the diagnosis.

We've taken the head off and found that the head gasket has blown in several places, and also the head is cracked in between all the valves, BUGGER :?

So now the plan is to get a new head reconditioned and ported, might take a little while for me to save up the funds to do this but it will be done ASAP :-D

Doesn't look like Geoffers will be making it to the CP vs RTOC day after all :-(
