Insurance DILEMMA!

Featured Replies

Alright guys, basically, this is the dilemma i have. i've been driving since February now, and I'm paying £1700 as a named driver on my mums insurance.

The reason i was given for the price being so high on my mums insurance was 'because the car is German', i was given no other reason really (lol).

A friend of mine has just been insured with Direct Line, her mum has THREE cars registered with them, she's paying £74 total of the first NINE MONTHS!, thats like £8 a month, although her excess is like £500.

Any way i could get my insurance to decrease? Am i being ripped off? Should i wait for my one years no claims? So many questions!

That seems far too much on a "named" driver.. I got that for just me when I was 18! How old are you? Whats the car? etc etc

Mega Ripped Off

yeah thats what i was thinking, far too much. I'm insured through 'Endsleigh', think they're an insurance broker, found me the 'cheapest' deal with Norwich Union.

I drive a VW Polo 1.4 CL, no modifications on it. And i'm 18 years old.

A lot of insurance companies will base the price on the most 'at risk' driver, which in your case is you. That is why its so high, all you can really do is try and shop around a bit to see if you can bring it down, remeber your insurance company will probabaly charge you about £50 to cancel the insurance you have with them.

If you join the club for a fiver there's a discount in the members section for adrian flux which might help you.

And your friend is female, so will get cheaper insurance. I think your quote is too much.

is the car registered in your name or your mums? Because if its in your name then it looks pretty obvious

that the car is yours and your not really a 'named driver'.

Is this fully comprehensive cover aswell? Mine drops from £1500 to £800 if I change it to third party fire & theft for a polo 1.4L.

Hello,

If you are the main driver you would be best to get your own policy and earn your own ncb on it. this is the only way to get insurance cheaper sooner.

Dan.

the insurance if for 3rd party fire and theft, given i do live in a notorious postcode where i live, i do hope thats not the main reason the insurance is so high. the cars in my mums name, I'm just a named driver, she has 10 years no claims on her insurance, yet her insurance company say that they won't insure me on her name until i'm 21.

£1700 is far far too much for being a named driver.

They must have been laughing once you accepted that quote.

What you should do is go on your own insurance, dont put no one else on it and ill bet you can find a cheaper quote. That way you will earn no claims too.

Where you live will make a big difference to the cost, here in brum I pay double what I used to pay at my parents house in edge-of-village gloucester. But if you do go on your own policy, try adding your mum/anyone else 'better' (from an insurance point of view!) than you, adding both my parents to my policy knocked about £200 off with elephant! I'm 20, 1NCB.

I'm 18 an have had a quote of £1500 for a 1.4 16v, with more than,

altho elephant i think it was was like £1600 or £2000 without adding my mum to the policy i think..

^ damn, i'm gonna check it out with them then

Although i do live in the LE5 area, a proper notorious council estate in leicester. Probably a reason the insurance is so high, do they mark it up a lot depending on where you live?

I've got a 1.4L with CIS as a named driver. Main driver has a TT99 conviction and 1 non fault claim. Me as a named driver with 1 fault claim. Can't remember exact price but it's around £800 a year paying monthly.
