ok my g40 as begun to steer itself! when you accelerate it pulls sharply to the right, then when you lift off or brake it pulls hard to the left. its not the tracking cos when cruising it tracks in a straight line. I'm thinking its probably the lower track control arm(s) though these were replaced less than a year ago, albeit with std polo ones and not the g40 rose jointed ones. is it normal for the std ones to wear out this fast on a g40 (i know they will wear faster anyway, but i though they would cover 20k without failing!) can anyone confirm my diagnosis or suggest any other ideas?

check the front anti roll bar mounts as well. you'll be able to tell if the bar has been sliding from side to side because the parts of the bar near the rubber bushes will be shiney.

Only possible out of that list is the CV joint, I can hear a grinding noise simetimes when on full lock at low speed.

one other thing to add, i swapped my wheels over the other day and noticed the front left wheel had a lot of movement. i.e. when i did the wheel bolts up it moved so much you could almost get it to touch the wheelarch. the top mounts have a bit of play, but nothing serious and there is a brace between the TCA mounts. I'm starting to worry that I have snapped one as the brace sit very low

I drove a G that did exactly this and it turned out the chassis leg had become detached. Not sure if yours will be the same, but always worth checking.

my chassis legs appear to still be attached! I might whip the brace off as I've hit it hard and a few bumps when I've been tanking down a few local back-roads.

My gti is doing the same thing. It slips on everything and the wheel turns at the slightest bump/pothole, and

when i turn around i can feel movement in the left wheel...hmmm

I had the same thing on mine. It was one of the track control arm bushes that had gone.

what do you mean by tca bush?

is that the ball joint that is part of the track control arm?

or the steering rack bushes?

very worn topmounts will affect the castor, you mentioned alot of suspension play, is it the topmount?

surely play in the wheel would inidcate a bolloxed wheel bearing?

well I've had a good look and it is the TCA bush that has gone (the one nearest the ball joint, half the rubber is missing) bit of a pian though cos I've still got to use it for work cos my bird is using my gt cos her tigra is buggered! and just to top things off some tosser in a 405 run me off the road yesterday and knackered two of my bbs ra's and blown a tyre out! such is life!!
