Modified car insurance woes!

Featured Replies

The story goes along the lines of:

Insured with direct line for a couple of years, spent a year as a named driver with them also, which providing you stay with them you still earn NCB. Which is nice.

So 10 months into getting my 3rd year of NCB I decide to get a new car. I share a car with my dad, but he's just a named driver on my policy.

Buy a 16v, and organise the sale of my 8v. All very nice.

Having read on here somewhere that you are generally better off getting insurance and then declaring modifications afterwards that's what I did. So today having bought the new car and got it home I rang Direct line to say that "I've just realised that the last owner of the car had changed the suspension, and lowered it, how will this affect my premium?" To which I got the responce, "Sorry we cannot insure anyone under 25 for any modifications at all from the standard specification." So now I'm stuck!

I can't drive the car, and neither can my dad because I can't declare the suspension and hence the policy is invalid. If I cancel with direct line then I can only claim one years NCB with a different insurer as the year before I was only a named driver. So basically I'm screwed!

Luckily I was given the original suspension when I bought the car, so it looks like either I'll have to change it back myself, or pay ~£90 for a garage to do it. Which i'm really rather pissed off about! :x:cry:

Anybody got any other bright sugestions that could help me otherwise?

Oh and the other problem is that the old car is due to be collected at the weekend, and then neither me nor my dad will have a car, which he uses to go to work each day! BUMMER!!!!

dude, seems like you are between a rock and a lump of shit, the only thing u can do legally is change the suspension back to original and retain you are 2/3 years no claims....

or u could just keep them on there and pray u dont end up in a crash which put both you are arms in a cast which therefore would leave u unable to to take off the suspension urself or reach into you are back pocket to get you are credit card to pay a mechanic to do it for you... :retard: if u did end up crashing, I'm not sure how they would, but if they found out about the lowered suspension, they would void you are insurance, leaving u well and trully shagged. insurance is a bitch huh? :-(

not much help now but ecar is quite good mod wise....

Some insurers will recognise that you've spent time as a named driver on another policy. I'd ring round and see if you could get any better quotes

Brentacre dont charge for any non-engine mods. they're quite cheap too. Try them and see!

I've finally come up with a solution. it just means that I wont be able to drive the car for 2 months untill my policy expires. Then I've had a great quote from HIC of only £50 more than the non modified renewal from Direct line. Brentacre were excelent on the phone, but slightly dearer than HIC.

Glad to have at least an end in sight though. My old car is being taken tomorrow lunch time rendering me unable to drive :(

id seriously try Quinn-Direct i think that most of us on CP are with them i know loads of us including me, long as u tell them what u got/going to do they dont mind as far as i know from other peoples comments, ring them up

For me nobody can beat quin and they dont care about mods, you also get a very low excess and 3rd party cover on any car which is awsome

yup mines is £700 a yr with 1yr NCB :) 1.4 CL
