Or you could get a set of steels banded, so you could have 13x8s and 13x9s for example. Not cheap though.

Then there is the option of Weller steels. They are 13" and go from 5J to 10J I believe. The offsets are generally not very good though, the alternative is Mattig steels, but good luck finding them.

ebay.de is your friend for mattigs

If your only lowering it 40mm I think bigger wheels would look better or else there will be a comedy arch gap. Unless your planning on running quite a high tyre profile.

I think who argument of smallest wheels are the best and biggest wheels are best is stupid. Its the wheels that suit the car the most that are best!

If your slamming it to the ground then smaller wider wheels generally look better. If your only lowering it a small amount generally not so wide but taller wheels look better.

Most people give boy racers grief for putting the biggest wheels they can on a car but so many people on here are doing the same thing but with the smallest widest wheels they can find.

Personally I'd look at mk2s lowered 40mm and see what size wheels suit that amount of lowering best. I'm going to say something like a 14x6 wheel with a 185/55 tyre on it should look about right.

I think Heartagram's right about wheel size vs drop. This is 14 x 6 with 185/55 lowered 40mm. Excuse the stupid roof rack - I'm lugging sheets of ply around!

Thats come on since that photo you sent me David, good wheel/tyre/suspension/trim combo!

mines down 60mm with a 40 profile tyre wheel arch trims are 2 go bk on but that what it looks like at the mo rear needs 2 go down another 15-20mm
