I’m looking at trading my Polo in soon, what is involved in swapping my private plate onto the new car?

I have been told I need a V317, just wondering how the whole process works (I’ve looking on the DVLA website but it doesn’t explain much).

The V5 from the new car will need to be sent away anyway…so it just a case of adding a change of plate?

Can I just walk into my local DVLA branch with all docs for both cars and swap it over? It was instant when I put my plate on, so will this be too? (I.e. I can put my private plate on the new car, and the old one on the Polo?)

Any help would be apprenticed…I hate things like this; they confused the hell out of me!!

Just go to the office with the details of both cars and they sort it for you, IIRC its instant, just drive home and sort the plates then

Yeah piece of piss...they'll try to re-issue the original reg back to the car - I'm yet to find someone who's not got the original back as they're usually boring regs. Costs £130 IIRC for the full swap

Thanks for the replies, once the plate has been swapped, I take it I need to wait for the V5 to come back to me, then just forward it onto the dealer?

I thought it was £80 Rupy?

Oh sorry...I didn't have a car to put the plate on guys...so it was £80 for the transfer, and then i had to pay retention too. I bought the polo some 4 months after selling my golf you see.
