Just picked up a car from a mate as a long term loaner as mine got written off.

I'm having horrific problems already with the idle from start up. Basically it's really rough and noisy. Like rattling your teeth noisy. The whole car vibrates stupily. The idle speed seems a touch high at just under 2000rpm, but I'm not used to non-turbo oil burners. a 2K rpm idle on a petrol car would be stupidly high, so I'm guessing that this might be part of the problem, but surely there shouldn't be this much resonance at any engine speed?

Please help!!! I'm going to have to bin the car otherwise as it's unbelievable atm...

Check the airbox connections mate, had a few of them come in with them insecure, sounds like the bottom end is falling out.

I'll have a look at the engine tonight (if it's not too dark or raining like it is right now)

I have a diesel polo and mine idles at 1000rpm. 2000 is a bit high but i have seen mine do that when I'm really low on fuel. How many miles has the engine done and when was it last serviced....

I would have thought 1000rpm was quite high for an idle speed. The car has done 78k miles and has been serviced recently, although I don’t think the engine was looked at too seriously!

Well, I've run some injector cleaner through it - to no avail. Bum.

Finally have a weekend coming up where I'm not doing anything - does anyone have any ideas on what I can try?

Changing the plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm (if it has one, not a mk4 buff sorry)

But a service like that doesn't cost much and can make the world of difference.

That's made my day! Anyway, seems like it could be a blocked injector; if injector cleaner hasn't worked, the only way to be sure is get them pressure tested at a diesel specialist.

mine idles at just under 1k. if you dont have the idle slightly higher on the old mechanical injection diesels then they vibrate loads and have a habit of stalling
