After Rach has been wanting to restore Goldie for a long time now, we finally retired her at the end of last month to commence work. Words can't describe the task that lay ahead of us...

Firstly I had a little accident removing the rear screen ...

Removing the other galss went to plan though, and already things weren't looking too pretty...

Front windscreen removed:

With the interior stripped, we could assess how bad the floor actually was. Some previous welding had been done on the underside of Goldie, but this shows really what we're up against...

Passenger side:

Further stripping of the underseal/sound deadening on the passenger side revealed this:

The conclusion is that the otter section of the floor to the inner sill will have to be replaced on the passenger side. The grot on the drivers side was easily more visible thanks to past bodges, but further prodding with a screwdriver really showed the severity of things (note the unit floor visible):

Having condemmed much of the floor inside, we moved our attentions to the outside:

Although not the worst rust I've seen on a Mark2 wing covered by trims, it was decided it would be best if it was replaced to prevent the rust imminently going through...

With the wing removed on the passenger side, a decent inner wing was revealed with some slight surface rust appearing on the A-pillar. In the bottom pic you can see why its important to properly rust proof replacement sill panels. The sills here were only 4 years old...:

Rear arch (you can see where the outter skin of the arch has rusted away to reveal the inner skin:

Moving onto the driver's side now, starting with the filler flap area:

After removing a thin layer of filler things became more apparent:

You can see in the picture above the jack is only just holding the car up near what was the rear jacking point. Upon removing the jack, it looked like this:

The rest of the sill looked like this after the trims were removed

With a large portion of the sill disintegrating in my hand, I quickly got the grinder out, and the hammer and screwdriver and becgan removing what was left of the replacement sill:

The sills aren't that bad and I think the floor is pretty good. but the sill still needs a few bits patching up.

Oh and I have a half decent passenger side wing, pattern panel though I think.

It has been mentioned a few times before the strip down. I can honestly say I was expecting bad, but not this bad, as was Rachel. Goldie bears a lot of sentiment to Rachel, so to that end I can see why she wants to try and save it. We can atleast give it our best shot.

Whatever you can spare! If you can sort out a floor and that wing, rear window too if its green tinted, then you'll be helping the cause greatly.

Past bodges like those sills really haven't helped things. Compared to Charlie's E reg Gold saloon you can really see the difference in rust-proofing between the Wolfsburg and Spanish Mark2s.

Before you chop anymore out Karl, put a brace over each door shut to stop the shell flexing any. Weld a bar across about 8-9 inches above sill level. Remember what they say about cutting out too much in one go and losing the shape of the body

Thankyou for the link Nick, i've had a good think about it and might go and see it tomorrow. Although we have been putting plans together today with the parts i have so it might be do-able, fingers well and truely crossed!

I'll get some close ups of the sills also. And have a better look at the wing. When it was replaced it wasn't treated or anything on the inside. Looks to be just surface rust but ill get the wire brush out and have a play.

Thanks for that. I have the inner and outer sills so thats all sorted, i'm just desperate for floor sections if yours are solid. Just let me know once you've had a look :-D

Don;t worry, both of those holes in the inner quarter are supposed to be there, they've just ended up bigger than they should be. The top one is for the inner opening of the fuel filler flap, the bottom one is where the top breather hose for the fuel tank runs through. We'll only be keeping one of those holes though. All will be revealed later...

Was working hard yesterday, reconstructed the drivers front jacking point which took a whole afternoon and thats only tiny in the grand scale of things. It's daunting but we shall carry on

It's ambitious, but it'll get there.

i know archs /sills is to be expected...not seen a floor that bad though

Previous bodges with sill repair panels that weren't rustproofed or fitted properly. They became water traps when combined with the sill trims, held water inside the sill, and inner sill rotting the edge of the floor and inner/outter sills from the inside. The drivers floor is particularly bad due to the battery tray rotting quite badly in the past, water getting into the car and being absorbed by the carpet. This when allowed to sit for a while helped to eat the floor as well as the water sat inside the sills.

The scabbiness everywhere else is generally down to Spanish rustproofing or lack there-of.
