fitting eibach pro-street-s coilies

Featured Replies

Just got myself a set of eibach pro street s coilovers for my new gti.

I'm fitting them on friday with my mate (renault mechanic) in his work.

Is there any advice that you can give me that would help with fitting them to a 9n?

Just dont want to run into problems..

Have any of you once fitted coilovers had to fit camber adjusting bolts?

will i need to take it to a specialist to get it properly set up or not?

Thanks in advance

i personally dont have tips for the 9n but regarding the collies, it really depends how far you want to go with the setup.

You could just fit them, set the required height and start from a soft setting on the shocks building up stiffer till your happy.

Then get the geometry set up also.

You could go and have the car corner weighted if your serious on handling.

soak all the bolts in wd40 or similair NOW, will make it easier to get em off

Fitting coilovers on a 9n is a pain in the sheckter. Rears are very easy to do,

1. Bolt out the bottom of the damper,

2. Get weight on the hub to allow spring to drop out and remove rubber seat at the top of the spring (place this on the new spring!),

3. Remove 2 bolts at top of damper,

4. Strip damper of top mount and bump stop and replace on new damper (coilover one)

5. Bolt top 2 bolts back in,

6. Insert spring seats and secure (usually a bolt through with a crush washer)

7. Put spring in postion,

8. Bottom damper bolt back in (a siccor jack will help here to lift the beam/hub up high enough to line bolt up, pain in the arse otherwise!),

9. Done.

Should take about 30 - 45 mins a side.

Fronts:

Passenger side,

1. Remove bolt from rear of strut (spline head bolt on mine not sure if it will be the same on the 9n3 GTi),

2. Drop wishbone, DS, hub assembly as low as possible but still support with a scissor jack,

3. Bolts out the strut top,

4. Bit of jiggery pokery and the hub assembly should drop off of the bottom of the strut,

5. Bit more jiggery pokery and the strut should come out by dropping down and removing top first,

6. Strip strut of grooved axial ball bearing top mount and bump stop,

7. Rebuild coilover strut with components from original strut (youll need a 6mm spanner and a 17mm sunken socket/ring spanner),

8. Insert new strut in same way original was removed,

9. Bolt to strut top (3 bolts),

10. Use scissor jack to raise hub assembly back onto bottom of new strut (pain in the arse as its a very techt fit we used lots of lube and a crowbar to prise the seat open a tad to help it in),

11. All bolts back in,

12. Done

Should take a couple of hours depending how easily you get the original strut out.

Driver Side,

Much the same although the hub assembly WILL NOT drop as low due to having a larger diameter DS. This is where the headache/ballache started for us!

Youll need to mash hell out of the spring seat on the original strut (in an upwards direction!) to move the strut up enough to get it out. The seat should stand up to the punishment fine though mine has a couple of dents in it but is A OK other than that (this is the orginal strut I'm talking about!).

Should take a bit longer than the other side but again depends how long it takes you to get the original strut out.

Youll need shit loads of WD40 or similar penetrating fluid and patience or a very colourful tongue :-p

I know its a basic description but thats more or less how we did it

Oh and on all 9n/9n3's no camber/tracking/toe is adjustable on the back axle and on the front tracking/toe is adjustable NO camber

Hope that helps bud.

Unfortunately on the 9n's the back just doesnt want to go low. You can actually remove the adjustment winder compltely which will give you up to another 20mm of deckage but isnt that advisable as a bump in the road that would cause the back to jump up could actually unseat the spring at the top which wouldnt be a fun experience (of course itd have to be a mighty big bump!).

I've considered doing it on mine but for now i think itll do.

The knocking noise may be the bottom of the spring jumping on the adjuster. Mine does it but it never moves more than 5mm up the winder and always goes straight back down obviously with the weight of the car on it. Just turn the tunes up and ignore it :p

Bit of a shitter about the pulling though. Mine did always pull to the left as standard and i had the tracking done but that had no effect. Now with the fat wheels on it doesnt pull at all which is ace
