I know this isnt any help but i had driven from northampton to Lincoln and on the way it was fine then on the way home when i had about 20miles left all my lights, stereo and everything stayed on, but my speed and revs all stayed on but my clock & trip counter reset. i got a Mk4 6N,

i dont know why that has happened can anyone help

check fuse as mine went but when car was running it came on switched car off then it reset

sounds like a 6n niggle! My gf said hers made a funny crunching noise and then the clocks reset! Drives ok etc, just reset the clocks.

i have checked the fuses but dont have a idea what one, they all look ok.

Had 2 different problems in this area, the first was id blown a fuse for perminant live so everything reset each time i took the keys out.

The second was all clocks etc reset each time i started the car - The battery terminals were loose.

Checked all these and there all fine! mine hasnt done it since so !! i guess what ever has happend to it has "Fixed itself"!!

I had this on my old mk4. Randomly the clocks seemed to loose power for a very short amount of time.

Tacho needle drops, trip millage resets, and clock resets. Never did find out what caused it, you couldn't make it happen by driving over bumps/hitting dash/anything! It just went in spells, some journeys it would reset a couple of times, then it wouldn't happen at all for a thousand miles or more!

Very strange indeed, best bet is just sell up! :p

Hmm i need to check these methinks. Mine have just started resetting every so often when i start the car along with a nice jamming/schhh (!!!) noise. Also it took quite a bit to start the car this morning when the clocks were doing their thing... hoping its as easy as a terminal loose!

lol! this is beyond a joke! i notice people was saying about fuses for permanent live & loose battery terminals but it cant be as my stereo has kept all its original settings (time and stations etc)!!

Not entirely sure, but the sterio could hold enough capacitence not to reset all the data as the drop in power is so momentary.

I think the people with noises have different problems to those with just the ocasional dial power loss.

Mine only resets when i start the car... its getting a bit more regular now :( when it resets i can turn the key the fuel pump primes, and its ok. then as soon as i start it to start the car the clocks reset and the car sounds like it doesnt want to start. then as soon as the clocks sort themselves out the car starts fine. I checked my battery terminals and there not fine. its really annoying me now!!!

Clean and check security of battery terminals.

Check status of earth straps.

Check condition with a meter and security of main fuses (if Mk4's had them - I'm unsure on this)

Check all fuses with a meter - check reinstalled properly.

Check alternator connections.

Yours seems to be simple enough, battery on the way out or lazy starter motor. Either fits with the car being slow to start and the clocks resetting in the process.

Its not as simple as that! The starter is fine. Sometimes you wouldn't even know theres a problem (like today). Seems to be more likely to do it when the cars been stood overnight or for a long period. maybe it could be an earth connection but once the dials have thrown a wobbly, the car starts like new! the needles also flicker for a couple of seconds.

Could it be a dodgy earth to the dials?

problem solved. The battery was kaput! My dad checked it and it seems as though 2 out of 3 cells we checked was about buggered.

A quick trip to my friendly tyre centre and £35 spent and its all good now.
