anyone have any ideas why my rear brakes are locking up under hard braking on wet/greasy surfaces?

its when not braking hard enough for the fronts to lock

its happened a couple of times now

car is standard suspension and brakes and doesnt have the compensator of the GT/G40

I didnt think it was possible to lock rear drums. Do the wheels spin freely or the adjusters done up to much. Is the handbrake cable adjusted correctly. Should be full on between 4 & 7 clicks

this happened to me in my mk4.. it was because mine has been lowered and the brake bias valve caused the problem..

That is strange. Are your tyres ok?

rear brake load sensors faulty?..thats if the mk3 has them.

If they fail then your rear brakes will lock up

Maybe the problem is not the back brakes at all. Maybe your fronts are knackered and you're applying more pressure than you think?

Only the GT and G40 have the load compensators as standard. Unless someone has retro fitted one! Which I doubt!

my hydraulic handbrake will lock drums at 90mph. and if i wind the bias right up on the pedal box they will aswell.

Why would you do a 90 mph hand brake?

For fun obviously.

My handbrake used to be able to lock the drums up at most speeds as well, but one too many times showing off in car parks etc I think has stretched the cable.

to prove that theres nothing wrong with drums? or maybe you should keep on topic. if you'd have read the first post properly you'd have found that the lower mk3s dont have brake bias regulators

One thought. Have you replaced the wheel cylinders lately? I wonder if fitting the larger GT/G40 ones by mistake would cause this?

I think you've just answered your own question. You've probably removed enough weight that you could do with a brake regulator.

If you've lost enough weight for the rears to lock up independantly of the fronts then maybe you could drop a few PSI out the rear tyres?

ok so theres a new develpment (maybe)

whilst in a muti-storey car park and whilst riding the brakes down the ramps the nsr (passenger) brake was making a terrible noise like metal on metal

would excessivly worn shoes cause the rears to lock up?

Try stiffining up your front suspension too mate, wil help level you out abit more
