I am buying a donor Mk2 bonnet to run on my car just over winter as my bonet was damaged by some kid. Want to get all the bodywork sorted out in one go and not little bit here and a little bit there. My bonnet at the moment looks bad. So i want to spray the donor one satin black as it is easier to get a decent finish in that colour (or so i have been led to believe) than my metalic blue :-)

How many rattle cans will it take to paint the new bonnet and an eyebrow spoiler? Do i need primer, laquer, etc. It is satin black i want not matt black.

How many cans of Primer needed......?

How many cans of Paint needed.........?

Do i use laquer? If so how many cans of that needed.........?

Before anyone slates my plan it is only a temporary thing and i am not expecting a top quality finish i just dont want the marks on my bonnet now to become rust over the winter months.

Any hints, tips, previous threads or just general help before i set about this would be great. What is the best rattle can paint to use.

heres what i would do

1. scotch pad the whole bonnet to give the paint something to stick (pad needs to be very fine p1200 or more)

2. paint in desired colour (i would stick to body colour) if you buy paint from somewhere decent (not hellfrauds!) you can get colour-match spray cans

3. wet flat with wet or dry paper, if finish is uneven

4. laquer ove the top

5. wet flat again till the surface is very smooth

6. t-cut (or similar paint cutting product) the hell out of it to remove fine scratches put in by wet flatting and bring up shine

7. give it a polish with meguires wax or similar!

i did a whole car using this method and the finish was pretty good, most people didnt believe it was rattle can'd

the key to it is prep and quality materials. oh if you go for satin black no laquer is needed.

Cheers for that very helpful. My car is LA5Y - Helios blue metalic......fair rare colour i have been told. Isn't spraying metalic much harder to get right though?? I am getting my whole car a good body work session begining of next year so satin black bonnet is just to put me on until then. Can't imagine a novice spraying metalic with rattle cans will come out too hot :-) I will be doing some good prep work whatever the job as i dont want to half arse it. Take my time so it doesn't look a dog. How many cans will i use roughly? Don't wanna over spend on paint if it is not necessary.

I'm no pro but i would say you would only need a can or 2 of colour and a can of laquer (large size) and maybe some primer if the bonnet has rust that need removing first.

this was the car i did (only did the botton half) top bit is std paint, it does look a little bit more sharp than the lower but that was only cos i got bored of wet flating and t-cutting it! i did the whole car with 7 cans of colour and 3 big cans of laquer, this did the sides and the rear of the car

Looks like good work and i love the stripe to break it up. I am no confident sprayer hence the satin black colour choice....the bonnet has no rust etc. will let you know the results and many thanks for all the help. Car looks good to say you painted it with cans

Metallic is harder to get a colour match on, not really much harder to get a decent finish than solid paint. By colour match I mean the bonnet will not be the same shade as the wings etc. unless you're a natural or lucky! If you're spraying a bonnet in metallic you usuallly have to get the front wings painted at the same time and blend the shade into the doors.

But for a quick sort, spend 75% if the time on preparation. Rush it and it comes out shite- that's a fact found out by me.

i dont really want to have the trouble of getting it all matched....lazy i know but as i am getting my paint and all the other marks on my paintwork sorted after winter i didn't see the point spending too much attention on my bonnet. Satin black bonnet just to run through the winter months. Cost me barely anything and no proffesional input needed really. :-) Get the pros to help me when i get the the looked at as a whole car rather than panel by panel. People may disagree but that is the path i am going to take. I will spend as much time on the prep as possible......i dont think it will look amazing but will tide me over until next year.

The colour match issue is a very minor detail - its going to be seriously close.

It'll match better than satin black.

Id use 1200 wet paper,two cans of blue,and two large cans of laquer.

maybe you are right and i should try give it a go on the paint matched bonnet....if i balls it let the pros have a go. I know satin black is not even a close match but it would cost me next to nothing etc etc etc....eh well i will think it up and let you know of the results.

when i did mine black i used 1can of primer and 2 cans of base coat...i would alsom recommend a can of laquer and some serious sanding!

will do buddy. depends on how much all the needed bits cost as to how long it takes to get it painted. gonna do both sides of the bonnet too..

have a go at it yourself not hard to do as said before I've also painted a complete car in rattle cans and it came out well after a lot of flatting and t-cut lol, give me a shout if you need any help you have my number

I think i just might. Then its all bonnet scoop, huge spoiler and some neons....job done. Mk2 as it should be.

Not the look i am going for.....it isn't even a look i'm after. Just a temporary fix as my bonnet looks ragged. Chips and small dints.

I also have another question. If i want my car painted, and i want exactly the same colour painted. What is the process. I shouldn't need the windows out should i? The interior will not need painting. The engine bay will also not need doing. Just want to freshen it up and remove the blemishes. I have been told flat and polish etc etc but the paint could do with another going over in my opinion. So what are the options and what is involved in freshening up the same colour paint? Would this keep the cost down at all??
