Grooved/drilled discs +fast road pads

Featured Replies

Sourced myself some g40 calipers etc

Now what noticable difference would I have if I bought grooved/drilled discs compared to standard discs?

Also fitted pagid fast road pads on my golf gti and thought they were excellent compared to standard

but are there any alternatives?

Both drilled and grooved help get dust off the pad, with grooved reducing glazing the most. Discs that are both drilled and vented tend to crack,id only use drilled discs if they're solid. But you're better off using plain vented instead. Too many grooves reduce surface area, but increase cooling and contaminate dispersal.

Depends what you want from your brakes, really - vented discs with six grooves seem to be most ideal for fast road use. ECP sell Ate powerdiscs for about fifty quid, which are spira-grooved,are said to be good in vented form.

groved and vented disc are designed to allow gases to escape from in between the pad and disc, thats the main reason for using them, cooling and dust is just a small factor of using them but you will still get loads of dust build up in the groves, so will need cleaning often, if your getting brake fade and have the chioce then put vented and groved disc's on.

The grooves are there to help in the removing of gasses but the vents are only there to aid in cooling. Heat is the main cause of brake fade.

On the road under heavy braking you should see a noticeable difference. To help to remove break fade you should change the brake fluid for some high quality 4 DOT fluid. You could go to 5.1 DOT but you would have to change it more often.

As for alternatives you good look at Green Stuff pads but I have heard they can struggle on the track but thats with heavy 200BHP cars so on a polo you should be fine. You could also look in replacing the rear brake shoes. They don't do a lot of braking but it should help a bit.

Hope this helps.

You on the other hand, are no doubt spot on. :retard: You've just pointed out one detail. I pointed out many, from my own and others experiences plus what I've read on various articles and advertisements. I guess all the companies were wrong. I'm sure you have a point on the gases,my deepest apologies for missing that, but then that would explain why the grooves do NOT block up in the experiences i know of.

Yet i wont ridicule your post - every little helps.

I've tried most combinations of G40 set ups, and the best was always the stock discs with some fast road pads (not green stuff unless you've got polished wheels).

I had drilled and grooved discs and they cracked within a couple of months.

ATE power disk are great and cheap. Ran them on a few cars and Bruv ran a few sets on his Modded MK GTi. Worked better, IMO, than some grooved.

You can now get Grooved and dimpled, the dimples replace cross-drilling to help prevent cracking but aid the gasses and surface contaniments to escape.

Look at ...

  • EBC disks and pads
  • ATE disks with Pagid pads
  • Zero Sixty disks

However, if you're whapping bigger/better brakes on a standard car, then go for Std disks and better pads, ie EBC green stuff,. Stick some DOT 5.1 in there and get new hoses or braided hoses. New or braided hoses and DOT 5.1 massively improve standard brakes on older cars (due to the hoses being worn and soft and sapping braking power)

I've never had cross drilled discs on any of my cars, but I too have heard of them having issues with cracking. However, Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Porsche and so on fit them as O.E. so maybe its down to the quality of the discs being purchased as opposed to the design??

I have in the past fitted grooved discs though. I found them to be noisy and within a couple of thousand miles the grooves were full of dust. I can't say they reduced brake fade either.

Personally, I prefer to stay with quality manufacturered plain vented discs and decent pads. If you want to further reduce brake fade, remove the discs splash plates and take two cold air feeds from the front of the car and point it at the discs.

My mistake it was EBC discs which cracked. They weren't drilled but "dimpled".

Best bet for a Mk3 is 256's.

yes mate your more then right i was ment to put drilled,

drilled and grovved discs allow the gases to escape. vented discs help in cooling.

i dont really no what disc are manafactured for the polos, but the best setup know to me apart from uprated brakes,

were zinnerman drilled and vented discs and pagid fast road pads, i found ebc green stuff pads to be useless, but this was only on my g60 so all cars are different and people use them differently.

and iam sure with your monster brakes and that huge engine you would no all about brakes, I've got bigger fucking brakes on my push bike.

Maybe you ought to stick to that, then.

Gentlemen please..........

on topic if you wouldbe so kind

Thanks for your replys so far guys has definitley given me some food for thought
