Mods That Wont Affect Insurance

Featured Replies

Not sure but would changing the standard paint change anything? It shouldn't but you never know; they might say your cars more appealing to thieves in black then it was in brown lets just say!

Changing the bulb on your numberplate?

Downgrading your engine?

half coded bumpers - they were an option on mk3 so how would anyone know otherwise? stereo, painted steels i.e. g60s wheels, clear indicators etc so there are a few mods you can get away with. going oem+ seem to be the way forward.

Am I right in thinking if you DONT declare every mod you are technically uninsured?

I was done for no insurance (wont go into details, but wasn't intentionally driving without any) anyway £200 and 6 points...

I'm on 9 points.. insurance aint fun for me :(

in a word yes! the way i see it though, is that if an insurance co want to get out of paying they will find a way. you've got to be pretty unlucky to have your insurance voided for running non std dust caps for example! I've got mates who have had their cars written off and they have had undeclared exhausts, suspension, wheels and lights and the insurance company didnt say a thing. its a big risk but a lot of people do take the chance.

Sorry this maybe off topic slightly but it made me think...i paid my insurance off in one go but i didnt have any mods when i insured her but now i do. Will i have to pay more now or wont they let me 'have' any? I have to insure it all, i dont want to be a like :ninja: looking out for police & i will be pretty buggered if i crash her!!

Bumper strips & debagding wont cost anything surely, everything else will though, they'll find some excuse for it to 'distract other drivers' etc therefore make you spend more of you hard earned cash! Gotta pay it though! xx

will things like badgeless grill and clear indicators need to be told to the insurance company?

the only thing you can do is phone them and see what they say!

i remember Quinn telling me i can go ahaed an put on a body kit with no problem when i got insured... not 100% sure though.

i havnt told my insurance company any off my mods... think its time to pick up the phone :smirk:

I'm with quinn all my mods are free :)

unless i do mods that will increase bhp

i said i had an induction kit and an exhaust.

she goes do they make it faster i said no proberly slow lol

they just make lots of noise lol

she said just cosmetic then :)

all sorted only down side to quinn have to have an enginers report to fil in

An engineers report, what does that include then? If you don't mind my asking.

I have no choice but to be a :ninja:

I asked Quinn about the engineers report and they told me they didnt need that anymore but they also said they have faxed me the cover note but i still dont have it and that was last tuesday!

They can't do you for clear front and side indicators, tinting the rear lights a bit, nice mats, gearknob and handbrake cover, upgrade the headunit and standard speakers, remove side strips, de-badging, bee-sting aerial, shiny door pins, color coding interior trim parts. These are all tiny cosmetic things that insurance companies cant even begin to value!

What about changing your seats ?

Not having rear seats ?

surely it depends on how picky they want to be? they are mods just as much as fitting alloy wheels are!

Umm, I haven't experienced this myself but according someone on this forum [i'm not sure of their screen name or the post it was in] said that brentacre don't charge extra for non-engine related modifications. I could be wrong but that doesn't sound like something he may have made up to me.

Yup but Brentacare charge a more in the first place...and also they require you to be of a certain age or have a certain amount of NCB.

Yep, Brentacre don't charge you as you declare cosmetic mods, but they were nearly £150 cheaper than the next cheapest quote I had - seriously! I'm very old and have shitloads of NCB, but most insurance companies wanted to butt-fuck me as soon as I mentioned modifications.

Mine was cheapest through Brentacre as well. I'm only 21 with coming up to 4 years NCB. They just give you a BHP rating and as long as you don't go over that they don't give a crap what you do. Which is good! I've been with them the last 2 years and I can see myself being with them for a long while! For modified cars no one is quite as flexible as they are imo. Just ring them up, tell them what you've done and they add it to 'the list'.

I think you have to be 19 to go with them. Not sure about needing a certain amount of NCB but I had 2 years when I went with them.

viper stripes

What about tinted windows?

I remember informing a previous company that i had tinted the windows of my corsa. They said that it would be a higher premium because it looked more exckusive. But that the premium would also go down because the tint would act as a laminate and make it harder to smash the window, making the car more secure.

I always found that if you ring them and say, I am thinking of... you won't get stung because you know how much any potential hike would be before you make the mod

It depends who insures you. If it's direct line then they have a very strict "NO MODIFICATIONS" rule for anyone under 25.

Which is completely rediculus - but they make the rules.

See, by the time you reach my age most Mods other than power don't incurr a cost with DL and even power hikes are reasonable.... ahh, the only real benefit of getting old!

Also, if you have options added to a new car they the Insurer needs to know, some class them as mods, otherwise ins will be invalid.

Personally i think car insurance should be optional like home insurance, life insurance etc.

And if you crash your car or it gets stolen you have to pay, its tough shit.

^^^^ That would be good, but only if I could guarantee that i could cover someones costs

Imagine for a moment i wrote off a ferrari whilst driving with no insurance. I can't even begin pay for that. But if I had insurance, oh damn £500 down the pan and matey boy gets his £75,000 car back

this is actuallly wrong if an insurance company wanna get out of paying then they will try anyway

i used to no someone who worked for insurance he said there has been cases where someone had a non standard badge on there car and therefor wasnt insured

so beware they will try screw you where they can

what about things like colour coding trim? and upgrading the interior to options that were available at the time of production.

from your registration plate can insurers find out the trim level of your car? i fooking hope not.

What about things like sunglasses holder from the golf. Does that have to be declared?

What if someone drives into the back of you, having not seen the inadaquate beam from your tintted rear lamps?
