Basically had my car in for a service / mot and it turns out that my rear brake adjusters have been totally destroyed by my wheel bolts which are apparently to long, so my question is what size bolts do i need for the rear wheels? Or would spacers be the better option? If so any recommendations on the size of spacers would be appreciated!

Lucky i had just picked up a set of steelies for the winter so there going on it for now.

I wouldn't start playing about cutting wheel bolts, after all thats the only thing keeping your wheels on the car. Had a bad experiance with bolts in my mates car 2 weekends ago, all 4 sheered off the front drivers side wheel.

If they are just a few mil too long id go for spacers if not just take one of your bolts into a motoring shop and ask if they have anything shorter.

Chop em off with a nut/piece of old drum (yes, I have done that lol) wound onto them, grind a chamfer and wind the nut off!

But yeah - be careful when arsing about with wheel bolts

Id start by finding out how much too long the bolts are. They may be just catching,or colliding 4mm in. Find out how much shorter they need to be.

If you have that much arch clearance to spare,you're best getting a spacer to suit. 3mm should be enough,cant see it needing a five.

Have loads of room under the arches could probably go 25mm on spacers not that i would though, from what the garage told me at first they said i would need an inch to an inch and a half spacers which obviously is crazy, so i went down and took a look for myself and from what i could tell there was only about 5 to 6 mm poking through and hitting the brake adjusters.

The brake adjusters were a real mess bent nearly 90 degrees but oddly the brakes felt ok.

Think i'll just buy some 10mm spacers and see how it goes, as always thanks for the replys

Blimey,what bolts are you using,head studs? And you didnt feel that? Well in that case it might do to just buy some standard bolts,because yours must be longer. The alloys should have about 5mm of solid flange between the hub face and taper,which would command standard bolts,but depends greatly on the alloys,being non-VW. If its deeper,you've probably got longer bolts to compensate - but far longer than needed.

The bolts only had 22mm of thread on them and were just catching the brake adjusters enough to kill them, was deffinatly a progressive thing and to be honest if there was a noise i probably just put it down as my interior being rattly as hell.

Oh well lesson learned i spose, still havn't got the car back as VW sent out the wrong part :(
