Hello everybody. I'm new!

and

I think that gap, on it's own, is not necessarily a problem.

My Mk3 (2F) sailed through it's MOT even though I replaced a shock and mount on one side only and the bits like in your picture were at completely different heights to each other.

I seem to recall, it's more to do with if there's any movement or vertical play in the suspension leg when the wheel is jacked off the ground.

yeah man, there is play when its jacked up.

You can shake it about like its anyones business. I'm pretty sure it must have been like that for its last MOT and it passed, but i couldnt be sure.

I was thinkin getting some big rubber spacers to put in the gap so i could tighten the top mount down on to them, if you get me.

You might get away with that if you put the black cap over the top to hide it.

I think there is quite a big 'BUT' with that technique though! (And it's not the one in your jeans, either!) :-D

i tried to fill this gap with a big wassher but then took them off after hearing the noises that sounded like the spring unseating itself then springing back in.

i think they are supposed to be like this and if you clamp them down it will put undue stress on the shock trying to twist with the top mount staying still.

i kno in my old car the top mount had a bearing that the nut tightend onto which allowed the nut to turn when you spun the steering wheel.

in mine if i jack it up and you grab the wheel top/bottom or left/right and wiggle it you get no play in the mount but it will lift up/down 3mil i have accepted it as normal as it went through the mot like it.

perfectly normal early polo top mount.
