I know a lot of questions come up on here regarding resprays but unable to find this in the search so.....

What would the process be to freshen up my paint work?? The car is Helios blue (Mk2) and i want it to stay the same colour. The paint on my car is looking a little tired and has the odd blemish here and there. So what would/could be done to get it looking like brand new? It does not need the interior parts respraying. It also does not need the engine bay respraying. Would the windows need to come out? If i had the bodywork blemishes, small dints and tiny rust scabs sorted out so they were treated, primed etc etc What would the process be? Taking it back to bare metal would be unnecessary? If i supplied the paint and materials what would be the cost for someone to resrpay the OUTSIDE only, and then flat it, laquer etc etc. I would have a go at this myself but to wreck the car i love just seems like a stupid thing to do :-)

Any information on the process would be great.

Anyone who can spray give me a ROUGH guide on what would be charged...bearing in mind paint etc etc supplied.

Anyone who can spray and wants an easy job and some extra cash fancy doing it for me :-)

Also what the hell is a blow over ....was going to type it into google but i imagine obscene things will turn up and i am at work!! Made an educated guess but if someone knows in detail that would be great. :-D

if you want a decent job all the exterior bits will need to come of ie

handles

mirrors

bumpers

windows

arches

grill

rear lights

washer jets

boot spoiler

badges

vynal on the b pillar and doors

probably more but cant think.if you going to strip it before its painted you will have to take front door cards of to remove the windows ect but the the rest of the interior should be fine but if it was mine and the interior was mint id remove the seats as bodywork is very dusty and can make more work cleaning afterwords.If you strip it and refit after the paint job that is where your likely to save some money

you wont need it stripping to bare metal apart from rust spots or if you have any big dents that need repairing

a blow over is a quick tidy up job just to make it look better

also most bodyshops have there own mixing scemes so they will only use there own paint and theres so many different brands they tend to stick to what they no

Cheers Luke....thought they might like to use their own paint. Helps add to the cost as well :-) my car is in amazing condition just a few odd areas need bringing back to what they were. I know all the bits would have to come off i just didn't know if the windows would have to come over if it was just a blow over that i needed. I know it would definately make it cleaner if they came out but , just wasn't sure. I need some little bits sorting out. I have no big dents just one small one and one scab of rust on the back corner which is getting sorted out soon as possible. Just want to know my optionsregarding what can be done before i pay to have the car resprayed.

id shop about visit as many bodyshops in your area as possible and and get prices as the cheepest is not allways the best and dont be afraid to ask for examples of there work any place that believes there work is up to scratch wont be worried about you checking there quality out before you pay out.At the end of the day its your car your money and if you see work that you wouldnt be happy with on your own car go elsewhere.I've had so many of my mates pay serious money to get there cars painted then when its done they cant wait to get it back that they dont check it out properly then as they wash and polish it they find little bits there not happy with.the key is to make sure your dead happy with the work before you pay any money and take it home as if you havnt payed them they have no choice to sort out any problems.

once you have found somewhere and it goes in go in and speak to the guys doing the work so they no exactly what your after as its an old car (not to sound funny i have 2 mk2s but some people dont appreciate our love for them)that way theres no excuse if theres any problems

sorry to leave an essay but having worked in couple of bodyshops i no what some peoples attitudes to our modern classics can be like

as far as prices you be looking at id say between £500 (very cheep) £2000 (serious money probably a bit high but just so your not missled to thinking paintwork is cheep)

I know paintwork isn't cheap and an essay is great as i asked for info. I know your not being funny but if you take pride in a car the value to you is a lot more than the average person. I love my Mk2 and see it as an ongoing project rather than just to put me on until something else takes my fancy. It is not a crap box though. Most would say it dont need a respray but i am so piccy about stuff like this. It will have to be sorted sooner rather than later i think. Beginingof next year is my aim, and there is nothing wrong with planning. Before i blow my budget on something else. :-) I don't want to pay over the odds and i dont want to get a shitty finish. I will be shopping around i just wanted to see what people on here had to say.

I've just kept mine in shape with rattle cans. Wouldnt suit you though,the latest batch were a terrible colour match. The only answer is to get a full blowover,with as much prep as possible - particularly masking in your case.

Id be removing all windows and plastics,peeling off all vinyl (it can be replaced),sunroof seal,windscreen wipers,etc and mask the engine bay,even if the bonnet isnt coming off,because of the overspray. Same with doorshuts - though you'll be able to clean off overspray on things like door lock mechanisms anyway,but protect door/tailgate seals unless you're replacing them. Dont mask trim,badges,aerial etc,remove everything and place tape over the holes from the back. And ensure all tape lines are going to be under seals etc.

you would be amazed at what detailing a car can do, you can make old paint look like new again, its quite time consuming but worth it, you should be able to get it done for around £150 upwards, and then just get any rust rubbed down and blown in, but a full respray would always be better, well as lond as its not done with rattle cans

I would love to try all this type of jazz myself but i just dont trust it. Could try and sort out little bits with rattle cans myself i suppose. To put me on until i can afford to do it all. Sounds like a right pain in the arse taking all the stuff out etc etc. If you wanna do a real job of it though needs must!! I could prep it myself but then what? I would trailor it to be painted? Or would they prefer to take it apart themselves? I need to give this some more thought i guess but thanks for the help. Will just have to see about stripping it all down for paint myself. Just pay someone for the blow over...etc.

What does detailing involve though? Was thinking along this route but i am unsure as to what results i could achieve on my car? If i had the little bits sorted out and then detailing?? How long do the results last??

I mean i have seen some peoples cars looking so good from detailing....but if it is only a temp fix it seems a bit of a false economy...correct me if i am wrong. Obvious it must depend on the car being worked on.

The main reason you dont use cans for a full spray is because the colour varies from can to can - unless you can get them all with the same batch number.

But they're closer than they are to the car. Detail it yourself with cans and you'll have a patchwork no matter how lucky you get. Its harder with metallic aswell,because the paint has a layer of clear laquer. Plus its acrylic paint - craft shop material.

Id suggest you use the cans as i have,being to act as a barrier as you sort the bits of bodywork out. When the car is in perfect shape,then you can warrant a pro spray.

Whether i ever will is questionable,but I'm not so fussy.

Wise words think i may just try and sort out the small areas i am not happy with myself and then once i am happy and in a suitable financial position (trousers down) i will get a respray. I am fussy but only as i love the car. It is purely for me not really bothered what other people think, hence me choosing the same colour. Thanks for the help though it is much appreciated. Better get on sorting out the blemishes now. hate to see my car get eaten by rust

You can get 10-20Yr old paintwork looking spankingly new with a weeks hard grafting .

There is small repairs needed but only very small minimal work. May get this craried out and then flat and polish, detailing whatever.....will give your mate another call though as i should have some money soonish.

I've mentioned this in another thread but I was thinking about buying a drivers side door and tailgate from a scrappy's, then respraying it to white (my colour). But as I'm on a budget I want to do it myself. The problems I think I'll get is matching the colour as the paint is pretty faded but I heard you can use rubbing compound to get it matching.

Come to think of it I could do with a full respray as I have some pretty bad rust which has eaten away through the layers of metal.

Sadly i have a few minor dents that i want to sort out and also the odd tiny bit of rust and a scab of it on the back corner under the lights. Bird crap has also stained the paint from where the previous owner thought that turd was a nice mod. Obviously i would not waste my time and money with paint if i could achieve my goal with a polish. Just seeing what my options are before making the decision.
