MK3 Coupe, uneven suspension REAR

Featured Replies

As many polo owners have said there polos dont sit level at the rear.

Heres the thought, I have PhillJ 60/40 with height adjustable rears.

As one side sits higher than the other can i lower one side of the car using the notches available

or will it ruin spring rates and just be too much lower.

Low side

I want this side the same as the above by lowering only this side..

Just give it a try bud, its not hard to adjust them. IF you have a spring compressor you can just compress the spring and do it that way, if not its still only a 2 min job to whip the whole rear shocker off.

Yes i suppose i deserved that answer, I've done it a few times now so ill just give it a go and report the differences for future reference.

I'm quite uncertain on how much diffrence it will make. On one hand I'm thinking theres quite an obvious difference and knocking it down a notch will even it out. However, at the same time I think the notch down might be to much!

Well i can only try and ill let you know saturday what the outcome is.

Tell you what you could d o though, thinking about it.

Jack up the car and try and measure the gap between the two notches for the height. Then measure the difference between the two arch gaps and if its roughly the same between the notches and the arch gap then just go for it!

AFTER LOWERING BEFORE LOWERING ONE SIDE

well i dropped the high side down a notch and its made some difference but not loads. I suppose it being a swing tyre rear beam

it was never going to make much difference anyway but its helped a little.

Actually comparing them again, its really made next to no difference at all, bugger lol.

Bugger! Shame!

At least now if someone else asks we know the answer. Think of it as pioneering work, seems like less waste of a time that way

Yes, its a bloody shame that would of worked well. Ill put it back how it was and try something else.

There must be a way of getting these to sit level without coilovers.

I'm tempted to drill a hole under the original once in the rear beam where the shock bolts on. But thats quite serious

if done wrong. My cars not bent, but the rear beam does not sit centraly to the car. I'm going to have a go at taking/

undoing it tomorrow and see what the hells going on.

ALL I WANT IS MY CAR TO SIT FLAT LOL..

Should be doable with coilovers cause you can just adjust them as you please.

Well I've dropped the high side another step, so I'm now down 2 notches.

Has made a difference this time but not 20mm, is it really worth dropping it down again i ask??

If i do that would mean I've dropped it 30mm more than the OS.

Any thoughts,

You need to get the front on a centre pivot. You cant tell anything with four points on the ground. Maybe use the brace the exhaust goes over,at the front of the car - lower it onto a low axle stand. It'll take the weight, but dont get into the habit of it. Its hazardous,so sit back as you lower each side a little at a time.

As the car is pivoting diagonally on its four wheels, its possible the passenger front coil, with less weight on it than the drivers front,is pushing up more, transferring more onto that opposite back.

The answer in that case, would be to shorten that passenger front by cutting half a coil.

You can check how level the front is with the tripod test aswell,by resting the centre of the rear beam on an axle stand. This is also hazardous,so again, keep clear.

Surely iff you change the suspension on only 1 side lowering it even furthar 1 side at the rears spring will be slightly harder than the others resulting in a obscure feel on the backend of the car ..

Probabbly me thinking a load of bollocks as i am not 100% sure how the Phil J Kits work .,

We all know why the Polo leans that side. But when its cornering on the road, the suspension is all working together as it should. If you're going to remove the rate from one front spring, you'll have to remove a bit from the other front,or rear of the same side aswell. If you only adjust one of the four legs, you'll get the same effect as a table or chair with a short leg - it'll pivot diagonally,as two opposite wheels press onto the road harder than the other two crossed.

This'll give handling and steering problems.

So if you're going to drop the passenger side lower, you should drop both passenger side springs, not just one corner.

So yes Stevie,you're right.

The passenger side rear can be lowered as much as he likes,it'll just lift off the floor! And the other three wheels will stay on the ground.

Indeed Dan,if you reverse the offside rear onto a high kerb, you should be able to remove the rear nearside wheel. And it'll just sit there like a magic carpet.

Lowering the passenger rear 30mm on its own might get the car to sit level when parked, but do a right at a roundabout and you'll be facing the sky.

I understand suspension geometry but that still doesnt answer why one side is higher than the other or why nearly all polos have uncentred

ream beams. If the drivers side was higher, fair enough the weight of the driver would compensate to a point.

Mikey, why does one side sit high. Am i the only person on here who doesnt know lol.

..... If the drivers side was higher, fair enough the weight of the driver would compensate to a point.

Well you have almost answered one reason. Remember these cars were designed as LHD so the driver side would be on the left. When they are converted to RHD the suspension isn't really changed. E36 BMWs have the same issue..

Mark

nice little thread i 2 have the same problem.............sometimes its not 2 noticable and sometimes it looks like i have a flat tyre 1 side it gets that bad really weird.............but basically I've got so pissed of with it I've ordered some coilovers 2 sort the problem out.

also worth noting weight distribution across the car. they dont just go side to side but also diagonally corner to corner, so more weight on the right hand front corner can mean the left hand rear is higher and so forth. only way to tune that out is by getting coilovers and getting them corner weighted

Yea i learnt that when i owned the S14, i was just playing about to be honest and to see if what i actually changed would make any

difference at all. Ill be lifting the -20mm side back up again as driving it this morning does feel (as i thought it would) odd.

But now we know dont we.

The only way so sort the polo levels out os by coilovers, now i knew that a year ago but theres no harm in trying something with the current setup.
