Went to the scrappy today and got the rear door handle cap from another VAG car, modified my barrel by removing the guts and put a metal plate in there and sealed it up nice and strong.

Exactly, the key is to keep it simple and OEM, then people don't know why they like your car, but they do.

At some point, someone not in the know is going to have my car and one day they'll be like "wow, it's got a refridgerated glovebox" or "wow, it's not meant to have those wheels?" or "how comes my polo sits a tad lower than that one?"

Hopefully someone will appreciate all the blood sweat and tears i've put into it, even though you can't really tell at times. More thought, time and effort has gone into me trying to keep my car standard looking than what chavs have spent getting theirs to look different.
