well its pissing down at the mo and yet agen my battery tray is leaking what a surprise!!!...having ad it welded twice its now really pissing me off........thers 2 ways I'm guna sort this......

1: put a layer of silicone sealer over the whole base of the battery tray.

2: park it in a garage overnight

move to the desert and have no external paintwork left at all cos the sand has blasted it away!

that will do at least it wont fucking leak!....

why dont you just do a mid engine transplant,its much easier than the silicone,lol

lol........hhmmmmmmmm nice idea just aint got 10 grand+ and even then it would still leak!!!!!! trust with leaks i dont av a geat track record!

I was talking to Joel (oilyfingers) at the poloshow and he reckoned he sorted his with fibreglass..

yeh fibre glass could wurk...............I've sealered the shit out of it so c how that goes

I sanded mine down first got inside the car with some duck tape waterproof an allthat (only time u should use it on a car when noone will ever see it lol) layered up over the hole, bit of a back breaker unless u take the seat out ofcourse. then filled the bonnet side with silicon filler an it been fine ever since an its rained shit loads done it few months back. cheap an cheerful mate.

kill all the rust. Cut the tray out, make a new tray and weld it in

get rid of the rust, kurust it incase youve missed any, paint it with spray underseal, leave it to dry, buy some fibreglass filler, i found the sheet stuff too fiddly, wait for filler to dry, sand it smooth and paint again if you can be bothered!

yeah, the sheet stuff can be a right pain in the arris but can be moulded quick to form any shape. The stuff in a pot can create an ununiformed finish if not careful and you'd be sanding for ages! I usually mix the hardener and liquid stuff in the kit together, coat the surface i want to fibreglass and then stick the sheet to that, slapping another coat over the top. Leave it to dry for a hour or so and jobs a good 'un!

I've had about 6/7 mk3s now and every one has had a mint battery tray! Its weird, cause I see so many people get cars with them fooked! Even the 171k GTs tray is mint!

tobyk: I've had the car about 8 months the first chap who done it didnt do it very well just plated over it............then i thought bollocks and ad it done agen at my old garage...........a chap called daryl done it and he is a supurb welder........hes nown in the trade and i used 2 work with him............he cut out the back half of the tray and re done it......the front half was left as it was the thing is is I've leak tested this so many times and I've literally poured litres of water in the batery tray with the battery out and not a single drop..........2-3 weeks later it pisses down and hey presto it leaks agen.........not hurrendous but none the less still enuff to get the top of the underlay a little wet.......4 now ill just keep an eye on it as I've sealered it all now so c how it goes..........really annoying tho cus the rest of the car is solid as a rock...........not even rusty w/arches under the arch mouldings

You sure its the battery tray then?

pretty sure thats wer the water is rub you are hand over the underneath of the tray behind the dash and u draw the water out.......I've had the dash out b4 and ther are no visible leaks........done a thorough check wen it was all stripped

i know its the opposite side but you checked where the bonnet cable runs? that can leak if the rubber grommit aint in right and maybe the waters running along something inside the car.

just a thought.

Nah its easy. Peel the carpet back from door to door,little bit of talcum powder over the entire bulkhead,hose the car down,check out the stripes in the talc.

Hoover the talc afterwards..

If you cant be doing with all that,get philosophical - and pop a small hole in each floor panel with a battery drill. The water will reach the road eventually.
