Hi all.

My Mk4 had all of it's wheel bearings' changed last year, which is why I cannot understand why I'm suddenly getting a strange humming noise coming from the rear of the car when I go over 40mph. Do they just need re-regreasing or could it be the brake shoes are rubbing? My handbrake isn't very effective at the moment which leads me to believe this is related to the strange noise.

I do, have one budget tyre on the rear offside. (Came on car when bought). I heard that budget tyres can produce loud noises, especially when they're running low on tread.

Any ideas?

Although you had the bearings changed last year, it ,may not take long for them to go fubar, especially if you are running aftermarket wheels or the bearings were cheapies.

Best to whip the wheel off and take a look at the condition of the rear bearings. If they look ok, you may be correct in thinking the budget tyre is humming although i'v enot heard of this before.
