I need some front discs for my 1980 mk1 polo. I have tried GSF and they only have 82-94 which are 10mm thick and i need the 8mm thick ones.

Euro car parts and camberly autofactors dont have any.

I have tried Volkswagen spares and they have some but for £25 each, plus delivery. I'm not paying over £50 for a pair of disc for my polo. I only paid about £8 each for the ones on my 79 polo.

They suddenly seem stupidly rare.

Any ideas?

Upgrade to VW1 calipers for sure, those early style brakes are just stupid

use 10mm disks, if the pads dont fit, sand down the friction coating with coarse aluminium oxide paper on a flat surface, but dont breathe in the dust

thats what i was going to say... its the same when your upgraded to vented discs with VWII calipers, new pads are 2mm too thick on etiher side to fit, if youve already had the pads on the car for a month or so and your just swapping discs you can ususally get away with it as there should be enough shaved off the pad

take note about not breathing it in as its poisonous and just generally fuckin nasty

No can do as its the grove in the caliper that the disc fits into thats the problem. The disc goes in, but wont turn and the front pad wont go in.

then you are going to pay a lot to find some brake discs that fit, its easier, cheaper and safer to upgrade to better discs and calipers. the reason they changed the design of the brakes you have is because they found ways of improving the braking power and reducing brake fading.

your alternate option is to get a set of 10mm discs machined to fit.

Yeah i had thought about getting them machined as i mentioned above.

As for VW improving the brakes etc, i gathered that, but i'm looking to keep the car totally stock as it deserves to be.

Its looking like i may have to upgrade the brakes on the orange one and put the stds on the blue one, but i really dont want to have to do that.

Surely it wouldn't hurt to change the brakes over to slightly newer spec? It is after all, a car, and needs to stop sharpsih if someone steps out in front of it... Better brakes are what Mk1/early Mk2s need!

As for upgrading the brakes, it stopd just fine, i have drums all round on my ghia and that fine too.

Its all about keeping a car as it rolled out the factory or as close as you can with new parts. The mk1 is a classic and i want it to stay that way.
