Cheers for replys, i seen that you were able to fit a 1.8turbo vrs engine in aswel

That would be far to heavy in the front for any sort of handling

G40 all the way

Turbo'd 1.6 8v like the one in PVW a few months back :-D man was that a sweet car..

From no personnal experience of my own id say G40

Could always put a Golf 16v engine in there.

For a straight swap the PY G40 engine would be the best. (Well its the one id do)

But if you use your imagination and a bit of creative engineering I reckon you can get any engine you want in a Mk3 whether it be up front or in the boot.

Cool thanks for replys, but how easy is it to get a g40 engine, would i get any near to me ?

This would be my first engine conversion, so is it engine, gearbox, wiring loom, ecu, dials, what else?

Look at the for sale section on here. Think I saw one for sale not long ago. Just have to keep an eye out for one I think they are pretty rare.

depends how much you've got to spend and what you want to do with your car.

the PY with an G60 charcher is the agielest engin in the Mk3 i think....an the best, too...

Ahahaha.

You're from Dundee, quite local to a good few members on here. We sometimes have meets in Perth on Dundee.

The easiest and one of the best ways to get a good powerful engine for your Mk3 has to be the G40 engine. Standard they put out 113bhp and a large amount of torque thanks to the supercharger. That'll propel your Polo to 60 in a shade under 8 seconds...great fun. Really easy to get 150-60bhp out of the engine using the standard G40 supercharger....this makes for a properly rapid car.

I don't know of any conversions for sale in Scotland but they do crop up. I bought mine in Glasgow for £600 but it has needed quite a lot of work.

You'll need to uprate a lot of other parts to handle the extra power. It may be worth starting with suspension & brakes first...and then once you have completed these modifications look into sourcing an engine.

thats your opinion because you have that setup.

i could say G40 PSD EATON.

G40 turbo's are becoming a nice option as good power can be gained from short money.

a different conversion would be the 16v gti motor from a newer polo, and be not so much of a challenge engineering wise.

very dependant on funds and whether you can insure it.

g40 would be nice 8-)

Depends on your budget.

If you have £1500 to spend and can afford to run and insure it, a G40 is a lot of fun and with around 150bhp which is easily achievable, you will have a car that can be driven on a daily basis.

If you're looking to spend under £500 and want some fun, get a GT conversion with GT gearbox and run 175/50/13 tyres. You can easily get 90bhp out of a GT for not much money.

Both engine fit straight in on the standard mounts.

Any tall block VW engines, 1.8 20vT's or Golf GTi engine will only fit with major custom fabrication, although anything is possible with enough knowledge and funding.

How much work goes into AFH conversions? I'm looking to do a more powerful engine swap in the next couple of years.

Do you need custom engine mounts?

LOL

How much does a late 1.8T block weigh? I'm not convinced that it's all that much more heavy than a Polo engine. Sure, an early iron block might be, but isn't the 1.8T all alloy?

After that there is the gearbox situation of course, I'm led to believe that to fit an 02A box the chassis leg needs modifying and obviously new driveshafts.

Any more info?

make that chassis LEGS! you need to mod both

Mikey's question was "what is the best engine conversion for a mk3 Polo?"

Surely the "best" conversions are those that require the least modifications to the base car, weigh the least amount, don't cost a fortune to install, and give the best performance/economy ratio?

If this is the case, a PY/G40 has to be the best solution.

Of course it isn't the best in every respect. A rear wheel drive conversion with an inline XE red top with throttle bodies or a 1.8T /4wd conversion will be far superior if all out performance is required. But cheap they won't be.

It all depends on how much you wanna spend and how practical the car has to remain at the end of it all.

As I said, if you want the "best" conversion, best get a PY/G40.
