Whats the best engine conversion for a mk3 polo

Featured Replies

Its like asking what the best pattern is for a tie. Its an impossible question.

But I'm gonna say an AFH 1.4 16v. Sweet, strong, smooth and reliable,it may not make the Guinness book of quarter mile times, but it'd be the beating heart of a fine daily drivers car.

Mine would be a better car with one,and i could be quite tempted if i found one.

Test_richie is selling a whole 1.4 16v conversion :D

With AFH I take it you need to change engine mounts?? What about driveshafts?

Anyone tackled this conversion? If it's too much work I'll go with the 1.6 AEE...

A whole conversion's no good to me,I've already got the mount and alternator, and would be using my bike carbs. So id only need the base engine.

And I'm not gonna pay much to upgrade to it from my 1.6,if it proves to even be an upgrade at all.

I'm loosing alot of power with a 4-1 cast manifold from a MK2 1.0 engine,plus there's a 35mm bore bend in the exhaust.

Once they're sorted,i'll see how much more willing it is to rev.

By the way Mikey, this conversion cost me £300 to get running - wheel spinning in 4th gear and taking out a Leon Cupra R,Mazda RX8 and BMW 540i - it aint a bad compromise. But it eats 5th gear in 200 miles.

MikeyMK, do you talk a lot of shit?

Hi all, my first post.

I have a mk3 coupe on its way and would like to go down the golf 16v route.

Is that common??? (Decent bhp and torque)

I have good spannering and welding skills so the fab doesnt bother me.

A g40 would be nice but they just seem like silly money.

You can buy a complete golf for a few hundred notes, does any one know what the drawbacks are??

Cheers

Golf 16v won't go in without the following:

Custom subframe to bolt the engine to

Chassis leg alteration at the very least to accomodate the larger gearbox

Lots of thought into making things work, etc etc. For example, the bonnet won't shut and the sump will probably scrape the ground

Not to mention the engine is far too heavy for any form of handling. If you are intent on using a tall-block engine, I think the all alloy 20v is the way forward, N/A or forced induction.

The AFH engine from the mk4 Polo 16v is far easier to drop in, although still not straightforward. 150 bhp plus from ITBs, cams and a decent exhaust and manifold should be possible. Use a 1.6 bottom end and power and torque get a healthy jump.

cheers for the heads up.

Is the 20v the equivilant to the golf, cupra, A3??

I have done a few search's but nothing seems to come up.

The only reason the golf engine peals is for the minimum outlay for decent go.

Thanks once again.

Does this mean you're impressed with the result I've found?

Have you tried it? Shut the fk up then you idiot.

Do you have the 1/4 mile slips for those 'scalps' then, or were you all racing on the road?

Thats not very nice... Was simply commenting that you may have made a mistake or somthing. Seeing as i remember you making one claiming that you doing a 1/4 mile is pointless unless your gear ratios can get you past 120...

Lol

you might have beaten the 540i if it was reversing
