Well basically i got a polo off my scrap metal friend, he went and got it off a guy, said he didnt want it, then i got it off scrap metal guy

he couldnt get hold of the owner, so i had to apply for V5...

but how does it actually work, do DVLA contact him and say, "this guy wants to apply for your old car"

and what if he doesnt reply?

youll need a V62 form, fill it out with details of the car and your details

letter goes to the last recorded owner asking if they consent to the change of ownership

if he doesnt reply there is a grace period of time but eventually the car will be given to you...

surely you cant put the car back on the road if its been recorded scrapped, or was it just left at the scrappers but never recorded as scrap metal?

na never recorded, he just knocked for it and guy wanted rid...

Remember the registered owner isn't necessarily the legal owner - without a bill of sale the car wouldn't belong to you, and when your mate got home and reported his car stolen you would be arrested for fraud/theft having conveniently provided your details to the authorities! If, however you provided a "friends" details instead..

but anyway, i got my V5 through a few days ago!

I'm guessing you will have had to at least supplied the chassis number (possibly the engine number?) in order to obtain a replacment V5. This will help to stop people applying for V5's of cars who's owner are out of the country.
