Car lifted.

Few problems with it but thankfully not engine related. I've a leak where the drive side shaft goes into the diff and I've a gearbox brace not attached which caused a really bad vibration meaning the graph is wobbly and he had to brake the dyno meaning no crank power reading.

Anyways, made 71bhp at the wheels and set up to pass mot emissions so I'm well happy. Stuart said it was a great engine and we'll get more out of it after mot with my manifold flowed and with the new exhaust on it. Not too bad for a home build and an engine with over 100k on it. He reckons that should be around 100 at the crank.

I also need a stronger return spring on the carbs.

Best of all the car is running perfect and idling at 6-700rpm. Also the car revved out to 7300rpm on the graph before he backed off so that's well up on the standard 5.5k of the old 8v engine and a bit up on the standard 6800rpm of the 16v car lol.

Few pics of the graph:

I'll post a video of the car on tick over later.

Hate to burst your bubble connor but that doesnt sound right! The valver is 100bhp at th crank standard so

So that should be about 85 at the wheel but with carbs you should see about a 20% gain at least :S

+ the stainless exhaust manifold etc should add a few more hp

looking good conner but sort of agree with sean a little shouldn't it be a bit more than that it just don't seem right :?

Work away sean you'll not offend me. lol. I know it's not as high as it could be but I've mot emissions in mind atm and are the guys with a 20% gain not also running the manifold like mine and a full exhaust system? I also have no idea of the engines history and it's got 100k on it so it'll naturally not gona have 100 at the crank like standard.

The guys that set it up reckon there's around 20% loss in the transmission. I still have to get my manifold flowed and my exhaust on anyway so I'll see what it can do then.

Also the burnouts I was doing last night where enough to keep me happy :p

I'll throw up a few updates tonight of more progress (including electrocuting myself :p)

sounds like a good update ill keep my eyes open haha

hahaha not looking to offend, just concerned, namely cause me and mike will be running a similar setup lol

fair does a few of the ponies will have escaped the paddock but to kick out only 71 at the wheels, your talking about 90 max at the crank, when you would have hoped for at least 120ish from a clean rebuilt engine.

plus that graph hasnt got a single smooth line on it, my understanding was that the line should be straight with a progressive curve higher but youve got peaks and troughs all over it, i think somethings wrong and id rather highlight it now for you.

drop someone like grungeisdead or skodaboy a PM asking them to have a look at that graph and they might be able to shed some light on it. I'm gonna have mine rolling roaded in a couple of weeks and ill be running

AFH 120k with rebuilt standard head

cbr600 carbs with full wiring setup

4 branch manifold into straight through stainless steel exhaust

so very similar setup and well see what the difference is =D

sounds like a trackday machine in the making ;)

Mine??? you must be joking lol

like connors and mikes, mine has had my own blood and sweat mixed into the paint and oil lol our cars run our passion and i cant imagine any of us letting our babys near a track lol

Think Connor said that he had a gearbox brace removed which gave the vibrating shown on the graph. I'm sure with a bit of driving the wee car will loosen up a few hp, has been sat for far too long!! ;)

  • Author

Colin's right, the brace isn't on and it caused so much vibration that the car was near leaving the rollers so that's why the graph is wobbly lol. Also the reason he didn't want to let it run down either to read crank power.

Also I haven't touched the engine at all from I got it. Infact I didn't even know if it'd run til I'd the chance to fire it up and it's been lying in my workshop for 18months. I'll have it back to them once the lot is sorted out. All I'm concerned with atm is passing mot with them.

you've got me abit wrong there too sean, no matter how long or how much money I put into a car it'll always get used. And used hard :D

I can understand your concern esp as you'll be doing the same shortly but it's not set up for it's full potential yet.

Ok so after my (controversial :p ) rolling road session a few things came to light, I need a stronger return spring on the carbs and gear oil is pissing outa where the diff and driver side drive shaft meet so I look into pulling the shaft out to replace the seal.

Also we decided to remove the power steering as the lines look shite in the bay and I'm not a big fan of it anyway.

Lines out and looking tidier already:

Before we finished up I went to unplug the pillar drill and got a nasty shock (pun intended :p)

Side broke out of the plug and I grabbed the pin:

A wee pic outside:

I'll be at it again tonight so I'll hopefully make more progress.

yeah a hell of a lot of blood sweat tears oil sanding and filling went into my car and i'm so happy with the outcome so far. The car will only be a show car but do have plans to take it to the nerberg ring ....if thats how you spell it lol :retard: it is a passion your right sean and if anything happend to it i dunno what i would do, if anyone damaged it i would break both there legs thats what my car means to me and i think you both would do the same.

i'm hoping that my engine will push out quite a few horses as i have re built the head, polished the inlets and exhaust outlets, new valve seals, cleaned and polished the conbustion chamber and also the valves, re built bottom end, cleaned the pistons up and replaced the rings, replaced bottom end bearings new crank oil seals its almost a new engine and it only had 80k on it to start with plus i'm gunna be running 1300 carbs dunno if thats gunna make any difference..... so fingers crossed.

Another update. Getting close to going back on the road now.

We got my gearbox brace on, flowed the manifold better with a dremel and got the drive shaft back in.

I started sorting out the wiring also. I started with this:

And after some pokery like this:

01032011113.jpg

and thinning out and rerouting the looms,

I finally finished up with this:

Also this bit probably won't mean much to anyone not on Club Polo but I'm making custom pop outs too as the 6Ns never came with them.

from witch car did you put this windows?

The glass it the standard glass from my Polo ;)

just read off of this topic and it is such an amazing build :) lovin' the colours aswell good chopice on the pink bay :)

I like the pop out window idea, are you fabricating the mechanism yourself?

setup right you should see some more ponies.

Probably ran low bhp figures becuase they retarded the dizzy for better running?

I cant help think that the gearbox mount ruins the whole smooth look - maybe it would look better cc'd pink??

Anyway loving the whole car mate good job! :)

pop outs look ace always wanted some

I never liked pop out windows until I had the polo which doesn't have them! Would be interested to see a how to guide for doing that!

Nah they're the parts from other cars and I'm working them to fit

I duno, it's set to pass emisions at mot at the minute so I don't care what it makes now. I'll get it set up properly after mot and what my manifold work and exhaust built.

never thought about that mate. I've a plan for the mounts down the line but that's not bad for now.

Got the bay tidied here and there too:

Also tidied up the wiring behind the front slam panel:

Wayne was down tonight to do the windows so hopefully I'll have functioning pop outs soon :D

We video of how it sounds under load, standard exhaust and not going past half revs:
