Looking well how you drilling the rear windows, always had a thought about pop outs but wasn't sure if the holes could be made in teh glass without them shattering!! Have a few spare sets here if it all goes pete tong! ;)

no holes drills at all Colin. have them bonded on by a friend who's a window fitted. And I'll keep that in mind about the glass lol. I didn't think you still frequented Polo forums. You get another one or are they just addictive? lol

Found out this morning I could get an mot tonight at 6.30 so we got the car together in a serious hurry to get it tested in the hope it'd be easier to get a retest before the end of the week. We got it to mot and failed so no UD for the Polo this year :(

The surprising thing tho was that with the carbs set as they are it flew through emissions. It scored 0.05% on the co2 reading and 347 on the HC reading so well below the limits :D

The sills need a bit of attention so I'm ordering a set of 6n2 GTi sills from VW tomorrow to weld in instead of just patching the standard ones. Failed on no side repeaters (first time ever) so I'll have to wire something to the mirrors. Also they pulled me on having a P/S rack with no P/S so I'm being made to change to a proper none P/S rack. That means longer lock to lock :(

Also Lee took into my rear bumper after it was plastic welded and removed the exhaust recess and tow eye recess:

Also have my pop out windows mounted on their hinges. I'm still waiting on my seals so it'll look neater when open with the proper seal and painted inside:

I'll have a few more bodywork changes and updates in the next while.

Tell me about it lad. I'm gutted. Altho the missus is probably even more annoyed than I am.

Aye we're still heading over. I'll be rolling in this:

GTI sills - YES!!!

No UD - :crybaby:

Ah good idea bonding them on, how strong are they though?! I take it the MOT testers took a screwdriver to the sills? :x

I've still the 16v in the garage, just looking into 5 stud conversion at the minute, have a set of wheels that won't work with adapters, almost there with it, then a few other bits and pieces!! :-) Should be out next year!!

I agree with you Toby. I'm still going. Just Pololess tho. Considering doing the Polo show this year if I can afford it.

Colin would mk3 GTi hubs allow a 5 stud conversion or are they not 5x100?

Aye 3 of them hoked for 10 mins before they got a hole. I wasn't happy but not much I can do. Also need to change to a non p/s rack as they didn't like the p/s rack sealed up.

Yeah my mate Wayne's a window fitter and he bonded them. They survived the shock tester at mot with no movement and I'll be keeping an eye on them but they're grand so far. Pretty sturdy too.

Connor

I took a look at the car I'm breaking after I posted on facebook and the steering rack I have is a p/s one, though Nigel might be able to sort you out with one.

Not sure on the mk3 gti hubs fitting, I've a vr6 set here and the spline is different size, need to do a bit more research on it. Thinking mk3 Golf GTI and Corrado VR are the only 5x100 left of the old style fitment, the rear discs off a mk4 golf fit along with a 9n bearing onto the 6n2 rear stubs I had already lol need to get a day and trial them on the polo properly!

connor, there is a lad on here "jodybrown84" or something like that, that has access to several polos and is going to UD maybe he could help you out??

Nigel's sorting me with a non p/s rack when I get home from UD so that's that sorted. I'll keep that in mind tho Sean and cheers for looking Colin.

Just ordered my GTi sills with VW there so they'll be here on Friday.

Need to get a few silly bits like handbrake cables etc and get the thing through MoT now for Dub Shed.

gti sills are a must! i love mine think thy make it look so much better. love the progress keep it going mate.

I was thinking about doing them a while back and came across yours dom and that made my mind up. Do you know if they lined up relatively close or what? I guess there's only one way to find out :p

There's gona be a slight difference in our sills tho but i'll keep that secret for a bit yet.

Connor

i wouldnt no as i didnt do it. one thing i have noticed is that thy have been welded to the front wings so when i want to do work on it I'm screwed haah

  • Author

Yeah I've been eyeing up a mates GTi for it's sills and noticed the difference at the bottom of the wing. I was going to cut the bottom of the wing off and weld it to the sill to create a continuous line anyway so the GTi sills will sort that for me. I wont be welding the wings to the sills tho lol.

Ok so UD is over and done and I drown my sorrows at it.

Before I left I ordered I ordered my new sills and came home to these :D :

I'm getting them fitted tomorrow night as I've never changed sills and I don't fancy fucking up £100s worth.

Should end up looking like this:

Also lifting my steering rack tonight so when I get the car back I'll fit it and the other bits and pieces and get it on the road :D

Also going to get a few bits powdercoated ;)

Ok so my first update in 5 months is gona disappoint as I havn't touch the car really.

As I said in my post above I should have been getting the car with the new sills fitted back. Came home, the guy had the car a week and "didn't want to do it any more" so I took it home and due to that, finishing uni, work and gona Worthersee I havn't touched it.

So before I decided to start again Lee, Ciaran and I decided to tidy the workshop a bit as you could probably see I hadn't much space before. So it's went from looking like this:

To this:

Pulled the car in last night and in just over 2 hrs its now sitting like this :D

IMG_1616.jpg

Also I got a manual steering rack and have all the rough cast marks sanded off it ready for polishing.

I also started playing around with a new plate recess idea too:

I've it all welded up atm, my camera just decided to run out of battery ffs.

hopefully get abit more done today :D

Connor

about time you got off your arse and got this started again =D lol obviously going for a shortened recess, have you thought about sinking it more also???

looking good mate

wish my garage would ever get that clean lol

ill find a pick of when i did my build on my beige 16v :D

thats almost identical to what i was working in if you hoke back through the thread. drove me insane ffs.

Sean it must not be that obvious what i'm doing to the plate recess :p

Connor

small plate recess :D

mmm I'm tempted hehe, has i have a spare bootlid off the valver I'm breaking..

yeh the garage takes the pee!

no room to move anywhere!

what did you use to fill the toe and exhaust holes in the rear bumper I'm wanting to get rid off the toe one on mine

about time you got off your arse and got this started again =D lol

Amen to that!! But hats off to Connor...some amount of work has been put into the workshop and is nicely setup to see some big progress with the Polo!! Get him back into the swing of it all n then it will be easy n handy for when I begin to melt his head when I finally get the Golf shifted and the 6N purchased!! :lol:8-)

the girlfriend plastic welded the recess holes and smoothed them over for me.

Toph don't you start. I'll get sean to ban you :p

Ok so myself and Jason took into the interior today and managed to strip the carpets, seats, underlay, dash etc out for a bit of sill and floor welding:

Dash with penis written in dust:

Next we lifted the car by the subframe with my bike lift to get the car high enough to weld under but it didn't go high enough so 4 of us lifted it by hand and got if supported:

IMG_1623.jpg

IMG_1624.jpg

Then started cutting at the outer sills to see what we were dealing with for fitting the 6n2 gti sills:

and Toner started to fork about:

Connor

I swear this is going backwards

Will get up some evening soon and get stuck in with you! Good to see it back inside!
