j reg polo 1.3 refuses to start.

Featured Replies

just bought a VW polo 1991j reg as a non runner,

seems to be a fuel/injector issue as if we put petrol straight into the carb it starts and runs but only until the petrol weve poured in is all gone then it cuts out... fuel pump is ok as petrol shoots out of the injector rail when we remove the screw on the end... just at a bit of a loss and the mo....

can anyone help?

it is a 1.3 1991 jreg, here is the ebay item number 120176972901,

there is a pic of the engine if this helps..

we are in rotherham

cheers again mate

well youve got yourself an nz engine there, so my injector will be no good to you, cos you engine is multi point injection! are you 100% sure you have pressure going to the fuel rail? cos it seems strange that all 4 of your injectors have failed. check the wiring carefully make sure there are no connectors that have been unplugged around the fuel rail

are NZ engines any good????

funny you should mention the unplugged connectors as there is one connector with four wires going to the

injector rail and there is another connector with four wires with a slightely longer plug which just hangs next to

the rail and is not plugged into anything!! weve searched and searched and theres no where to plug it in!

unless there is a socket hiding anywhere?? we were wondering if the car has had a engine change at some point

coz the engine looked quite good to be in an old polo

cheers..

the nz is similar to a gt engine only less powerfull and has a slightly different injection system. can you get a close up pic of the fuel rail and the loose connector?

yeh sure,, when i get home ill take a few close pics and post them on here..

thanks mate

post-14552-1194379333_thumb.jpgpost-14552-1194379385_thumb.jpg

here are the pics, the plug that goes onto the end of the injector rail is slightely smaller than the plug in my hand but both have 12v going to them as we checked them both with a multimeter...

cheers

IIRC there are 4 plugs within that area, one to the rail, one for the knock sensors(?) and 2 which plug in just behind the rail.

Does the car turn over ok?

Does it ever try to start? (eg pick up and then fall back down)

Have you had any earth problems? Mine was like this because the alternator spiked due to a bad earth and killed the ECU.

ill check how many plugs we got connected tommorow nite when i get in from work, the car turns over fine and when we pour fuel down

the carb it starts and runs sweet until the fuel in the carb has been used up and then dies, unless we pour fuel down the carb it just turns over but

does not fire..

There is definately fuel in the injector rail coz if we remove the silver screw on the rite of the rail and turn the key the fuel pump kicks in and petrol

spirts out

Not sure about earth probs as we have only just purchased the car...

Its highly unlikely that all four injectors would die at once so my guess is you have wiring probs or the ECU has gone. The screw at the end of the rail is the fuel pressure test point. The throttle body only controlls the amount of air into the engine so that wont cause a fuelling issue. If you can, get a mobile tuner to come out and get a multimeter on the plugs and try to find the missing plug. I did this to test my ECU as they have books that show the exaxt wiring for the ECU and injection system and it only cost £40 call out charge.

will it start if you hold throttle fully open, just fluttering it slightly

might give the mobile tuner a try as we are struggling.

cheers anyway mate

no it wont start with the throttle fully open or closed or fluttering it slightely..

gave u checked your engine number matches one on log book

as there shouldn't be a spair connector

as there shouldn't be a spair connector

just sent log book off to DVLA so as soon as it comes back ill have a look and make suer the numbers match..

Do they fit this type of engine to the polo's?

yeah its a polo engine. was commonly fitted to the genesis models and a few other special editions. it does seem strange that there is a spare connector. have you tried contacting the previous owner to ask if the engine was a conversion? I'm fairly sure that your prob is electrical and not mechanical

hmmm... I just went and had a look on my nz and I can't seem to find that plug (although it is dark) what colour are the leads going into it?

That would probably help trace it....

Is that the hall sender plug?

Is that the hall sender plug?

what is a hall sender plug??? our spare plug has got 4 wires on it and just hangs,... weve tested each spark plug and theres definately a spark, we have tested the injectors and every one sprays a sufficient amount of fuel. Weve changed the plugs and on the 1st turn of the key it fired and then back to square one again with it just turning over

Weve got spark, weve got fuel, weve got power going to injectors????

:crybaby: weve got a spare connector?????????????????????????????????????

That looks like the lambda sensor plug.

That looks like the lambda sensor plug.

post-14552-1194564110_thumb.jpg

can anyone post a pic of their NZ engine to see if we have anything missing under the bonnet?

cheers

That definitely looks like a lambda sensor plug....

Have you had a look down behind the engine? The lambda sensor is fitted into the exhaust downpipe just in front of the cat.

Actually, I've just read on the eBay ad that the car has had a new exhaust system, has it still got a lambda sensor??

It should still start even with that disconnected. I know a GT will, but I don't know if the NZ management will allow the engine to start with the lambda disconnected or if it will run so lean that it won't fire.

It'd also be worth looking at the air flow meter just to make sure the wiring is OK on that as well, and that its not stuck wide open or something like that...

Yes we've had a look all round the engine and I can't find where the lambda is (I'll have a better look tonight tho)

The plug thats on its own doesn't seem to reach far enough to go anywhere, and also we checked it with a multimeter. when you turn the ignition on there about a 1 second supply of 12v to the plug that goes on the injector rack. This loose plug has exactly the same amount of power for the same amount of time so wonfered if it could be something to do with the injectors? although like I said we just can't see anywhere where this plug could go.

ITS SO FRUSTRATING!!! :-(

The lambda is very obvious. Follow the exhaust down from the engine and the lambda probe is actually in the exhaust pipe itself. A little way back from the engine. The probe has a long wire on it that should have a plug on the end. That plugs into something very similar looking to what you have there.

(Sorry if you knew that already, from your previous post it wasn't obvious or not if you knew)

:-)
