basically me and poundie were talking about side exit exhausts, and we are unsure if there is a law regarding them

ie, injury to pedstrians or some bullsh#t

poundie was to lazy to post :-D :-D so if any one knows the crack

let us know pls

By law they must exit on the drivers side.

I think they are ok it would just be loud, which would catch the attention of the old bill.

gotta come out the drives side which means gettin round you fuel tank.. that n no clearance if runnin low.

could cut into seal n box round it to raise pipe abit but may fail a mot.

if u could come out the passenger side theres just enough space for a small back box.. change it for mot time maybe??? just the clearance problem then.

looked into doing one awhile back.. upswept twin dtms comin straight out the passanger side.. drag car styleeee.

may sound shit but when offering up the pipe it looked the nuts.

i had one on my mk3, that came out the passanger side and the 2 times i got pulled in it they never said any thing about it (and one of the times they were ripping my car to bits nearly :( ). that was just a straight though pipe from the center box and it sounded sweet, and it was on a mk3 lowered 80mm and never caught apart from when i tried to get up a big curb.

Hmmm cheers guys! Think we can find a way round this, gonna need a bloody good pipe bender tho!

Just aslong as its legal then were fine, if the only law is it has to come out the drivers side then its all good

Just guessing but maybe something to do with people walking on pavements at the side of the road?

Well, a lot of mk3 people claim its to get clearance issues when running there car low but tbh I ran a full stock system on a kit that was harder than most and was fairly low and I never had any problems.

Took a while to work out how to fit it properly and it fell of plenty of times before hand but being persistent worked fine in the end!

not into them myself but best person to ask would be an MOT tester i guess!

might aswell run them coming out the bonnet LOL

i saw a guy with a mk2 golf. (280bhp TTengine ) had a side exit but on the left hand side. he didnt mention anything about it?

The one on my kit car comes out of the nearside. The MOT tester's line is always that he probably shouldn't pass it as it exits on the nearside before the rear wheel. But then we're mates.

As for noise, construction and use isn't any more specific than "a reasonable level".

Side exit exhausts are legal mate. I work for a company that makes adapted vehicles and all our models have full UK Low Volume Type Approval, and before that, they each had Enhanced Single Vehicle Type Approval.

Our old model Kangoo had to have a side exit exhaust because of the lowered floor and although generally getting any type of Type Approval is a major pain in the ass and frigging difficult, our old side exist exhaust was no issue as long as it was driver's side.

You won't find anyone more fussy than a VCA inspector, and like I say, we never had an issue with probably about 300 of ours, so you shouldn't either, especially as the mod will be done post registration so won't need any type of Type Approval.

If it's behind the rear wheels it's not classed as a side exit.

Where does this "must exit on driver's side" idea come from? Many kit car and commercial vehicles have side exit exhausts on the nearside. The rally car has a side exit just in front of the nearside rear wheel and has never been an issue for the MOT. I know of several other rally cars with side or sill exit exhausts on the nearside which pass the MOT with no problems.
