Hey everyone. I've just sourced myself a set of VWII calipers and carriers from a G40 and am planning on rebuilding them and painting them.

Just wondering if anyone on here has done this and if so, what bits should i replace? I am going to need new caliper mounting bolts(the old ones are rusted to shit), carrier mounting bolts, and the piston dust and hydraulic seals, just wondering if there is anything i might have missed.

My plan is to do it all in a day so i want to have the replaceable bits before i tear the calipers apart.

Oh, I have also read that G40 calipers won't fit under 13" wheels....can anyone confirm this?

They will fit some 13s and not others, it depends on the offset and width really. What wheels are they?

I'd like to know what bits to replace too as I'm doing this in a month!

I've currently got standard polo fox steels. i think they are et28 or something similar...

replace the two allen bolts that hold the caliper to the carrier and the slider bushes they slide into. Also replace the piston seal and the dust cover, none of these parts are particularly expensive. Hint: to remove the piston, attach a bike tyre pump to the brake pipe connector and pump it up to push the piston out. Trying to grab hold of it to pull it out with pliers or something will just end up damaging it.

Genious! I didn't think of that...mr haynes says to use low pressure compressed air....i was going to try blow down the pipe...

Ooh, another question, should i use some sort of rust-proofing before i paint the calipers, or is there no point?

Not really much point, just clean them up well and use some direct-to-rust paint if you don't want a perfect finish.
