I need some help regards my in car entertainment, or lack of as it seems right now. At the moment i just have a hand me down head unit and a hand me down set of 6x9's (yes they're shit, i know, i know) built into a sturdy stealth shelf that i made. Very tidy shelf to be fair and doesn't sound all that bad. although i am sick of all the sound coming from the rear of my car.

I am going to make up some door pods for the front as the group buy seems to have fallen on its arse to be honest. I am also going to be getting rid of the 6x9's. The problem is i don't know what to spend my money on?!?!?! Say i have £250 to spend (maybe less/maybe more) and i have an alpine headunit lined up so the £250 is for everything else.

I am not fussy about loads of thumping bass. I just want a nice balanced sound that is clear. So what do i buy??

Consider me as a complete novice, i know noting so it would help to be shown where to place everything and in what order things go etc.

So,

A) Whats the best to be spending my money on?? Below budget is better than over budget.

B) What order does everything go? Where do you place tweeters etc etc.

Take into account that i know positively nothing about this and this is my first time attempting, buying etc!!

Any help is great as always :-)

a few years back when i had a coupe s i just fitted a set of mb quart tweaters up front and had a set of 6x9s and a cheapo sub in the back to make a bit of noise. including the headunit toal cost was about 250 and it sounded respectable too

I bet you also ran into the trouble of having no where to put speakers :-)

I would like to make some door podds and have a bit of the sound closer to the front. Is it best to have a sub. I Mean i could up the budget to about £300-£350 at a push. I just don't want to waste my money as what i would choose would no doubt be not so good.

Just getting ideas at the moment. Sick of my 6x9's but thats mainly due to the hell job i did of wiring them in!! :-)

just go with a set of tweaters up front, you will be amazed how much they bring the sound forward. i could have and did on some occasions run without the 6x9s, so it was just the tweaters and the sub, albeit with the sub set to do all the midrange too, so wouldnt go as loud

alpine custom dorr speakers and either the vibe sek69 6x9s or the pioneer E6911 6x9s mate VIBE is the way forward dude

a decent set of components in the doors/somewhere up front and a cheapo sub/amp combo and you're sorted. Tbh, 6x9s are ok if you have rear passengers but will get easily lost if you have a sub.

If you don't want a sub, there are 6x9s out there which will give you a smallish amount of bass if you don't want to sacrifice boot space.

Aguy on here called Foxie seems to be the best source for audio ideas so PM him. I'll just tell you to buy Rockford fosgate which my stereo consists of!

get on www.talkaudio.co.uk and ask on there, there is also classifieds you can look at with some very good deals

focal do some great component speakers i've always had them in my cars, around £100 for a decent set is what i usualy pay.

my advice would be sod your passengers! go for decent comps up front with a decent sub and amp, bigger is not better in my opinion tho!

alpine head unit will make a big difference straight away!

remember to upgrade your cables to! and take pleasure in binning those 6x9's!!!!!!

Mate when i have sorted my self out with something decent you can have my stealth shelf. Consists of a couple of pieces of MDF and some acoustic carpet. Easy as pie. Just thing about it all carefully. All i knew is that 6x9's were crap and that they are even worse just cut into a parcel shelf as they are better mounted in something more substantial. 6x9's are ok if like me you got them free!! :-) Don't waste good money on them though. Get a little more saved and get something nice!! :-)

If they're free theres nowt wrong with them, but certainly not worth buying new. I don't run a sub yet, and i intend to upgrade the front 3" speakers before i get one - the 6x9 i got given provide plenty of bass for the moment. However when the sub eventually gets bought, the 6x9 will either be relogated tom the rear door cards (with strengthening) or i will buy some 6x4 to go in the parcel shelf supports.

6x9 in a parcel shelf, with a sub in the boot, is a recipe for murky, crap sound in your car.

only way really to make it sound ok is do what I've done...

6x9's came in car so just put a sub in the boot...

faded all the bass out of the 6x9's using my head unit so bass just comes from the sub and it sounds ok :)

My car system sounds dirt but i think it is due to dodgy wiring. Will change all this when i get the headunit in.

We'll have a look and sort something out matey Nothing worse than crap sound in your car for ages!

I have a Pioneer head unit (200w) and 6x4" speakers (don't laugh) in the rear parcel shelf (220w).

And my I say the sound quality is more than good enough for me and shite for people listening a metre away from my car

Hi all, ICE...ah the possibilties are endless!!

Alpine headunit is a top start. If you're building pods or even running 6x9's try to buy matched kit, designed to run together, can tweak and shape the sound far esier than a mish-mash.

It's all down to personal taste though.

I'm running full alpine type r kit. Shakes mirrors, passengers..upsets parents...

Get some 20mm MDF, cut the 6x9 holes, bolt the screws down through the speakers, into the parcel shelf and into the mdf...tightens up the bass mahoosively!! wrap some acoustic cloth round the entire thing so they're hidden and job's a good 'un. Costs £20 if you're doing it expensively! :-D
