after getting myself and SLR soon as the phone just isn't that good tbh been looking around at a few things but i thought i'd try getting some advice off people who might have a clue about them and not just want my money!

soo can you post a pic that you've taken (of a car of course) and tell me what you used to take it so i can see what they're like. oh and any advice will be greatly accepted!

The only real problem is that you do not have a big choice of other lenes if you want to get a different one.

was looking at the d40 kit in lce pretty reasonable but might try and hang on till a decent d70/d80 comes in second hand!

A DSLR has almost no impact on the quality of the photo taken, image quality relies on the lens used, not the camera. A photo from a £200 Canon 350d using the 18-55 kit lens, will look almost identical in terms of image quality, to a £6000 Canon 1ds MKIII using a 18-55 kit lens. Same applies to the amount of megapixels a DSLR has. Unless your printing photos out at A3 paper size, you will hardly be able to tell the different between 6mp and 21mp.

Buy a DSLR on ergonomics and functions. The Canon 400D is a small camera, so unless you have small hands you might find it quite uncomfortable. As for the Nikon D40, it does not have an internal autofocus motor (that is why the camera is so cheap), because of this you will need to buy either Nikon AF-S or Sigma HSM lenses to have autofocus. Most of these cost £500 upwards (the good ones close to £1000).

If your not looking to get into photography seriously the Nikon D40 and 18-55mm kit lens is a very capable first time DSLR, and although being a very low end DSLR kit, you will be very impressed with the image quality it provides. If however, your looking to get into photography, you will outgrow the D40 very quickly.

I have a 400D with 18-55mm kit lens, and a Canon 75-300mm zoom lens (which i haven't really had chance to use)

Taken the following with just the normal 18-55mm kit lens.

Cool pics people, but as DubLass said if you want to take chrisp pin sharp pics with great colour its down to the lens really, it also depends what kind of pics you want to be taking etc.

Not sorted it yet, gona try 2mos, I've been at the hospital tonight visiting family so havnt had any time, theres no rush craigy!

On what seems an insignificant side note now, i have the sigma 10-20, its a fantastic lens! Most my landscape photography is taken with this. Not really any good for automotive photography though, as at anything less than 18mm, the car looks like its bending in half You need something at least 50mm to reduce any barrel distortion and to give a narrow depth of view.

Not life thretning, my gdad fell off a ladder whislt painting at chruch and he leg snapped just below the knee, and came though his leg he is doing well though, cheers.

Yeah the 10-20 will be good for interior shots if you want to get everything in the pic, it wont just be used for auto pics though

I've just got the Nikon D40x..Haven't got any photos on the computer yet but I am very pleased with it as I'm a noob at photography and so is brilliant for someone like me who wants to advance a bit

I disagree. A DSLR will (in general) have a far bigger sensor than a compact camera and therefore capture and resolve an image at say 8mp far better than a compact will at the same resolution.

A "proper" DSLR will also tend to use a CMOS sensor rather than a CCD which again, is a superior way of capturing images (once the noise issues are dealt with properly)

However, i completely agree that the lens is extremely important. The age old analogy of "GIGO" tend to come into play here. Garbage In, Garbage Out. If you don't use a decent bit of glass.. you arn't ever going to be able to get the shots you should be able to get!

Should of made myself my clear, i was referring to dSLR's when comparing IQ, not compacts/dSRL's. Your right about the noise though! This is what makes dSLR's so desirable, high ISO handling is incredible compared to compact/bridge cameras, and when coupled with f/2.8 or faster lenses, it makes the use of flash almost non existent. I love my SB600 though, its great for fill flash in bright sun, and works excellently bounced in a room.
