Yeah the 10-20 will be good for interior shots if you want to get everything in the pic, it wont just be used for auto pics though

I disagree. A DSLR will (in general) have a far bigger sensor than a compact camera and therefore capture and resolve an image at say 8mp far better than a compact will at the same resolution.

A "proper" DSLR will also tend to use a CMOS sensor rather than a CCD which again, is a superior way of capturing images (once the noise issues are dealt with properly)

However, i completely agree that the lens is extremely important. The age old analogy of "GIGO" tend to come into play here. Garbage In, Garbage Out. If you don't use a decent bit of glass.. you arn't ever going to be able to get the shots you should be able to get!

Should of made myself my clear, i was referring to dSLR's when comparing IQ, not compacts/dSRL's. Your right about the noise though! This is what makes dSLR's so desirable, high ISO handling is incredible compared to compact/bridge cameras, and when coupled with f/2.8 or faster lenses, it makes the use of flash almost non existent. I love my SB600 though, its great for fill flash in bright sun, and works excellently bounced in a room.

I've been using a 40D with a 70-200 f4 Lseries IS USM EF recently.. even at ISO 1000 there was virtually no grain whatsoever (in a very dark stage show environment). Boy was i impressed. I really wanted to play with the f2.8 but we didn't have one kicking about!

D80 :)

The 40D is a bargain for the spec, but not enough improvements to warrant buying one if upgrading from a 30D IMO. I've seen high ISO examples, and they are pretty impressive, still doesn't touch the 5D though :p.

The way the Nikon D3 handles noise is revolutionary though, perfectly useable ISO20,000

Haha, you're right.. But I couldn't justify even wanting a 5 considering I know nothing about photography!

The D80 is a definately a good camera, I've seem some great results from them... as for the 30->40 upgrade: There are definately some features that are great to have, but yes, warranting the extra cash can be difficult considering its not full frame etc. The speed, live view, the bigger screen, the self cleaning sensor system and the extra megapixels make it a worthy case for it though!

The L series lens is ridiculously good. Stupidly fast focusing and crystal clear. That's why it's the best part of a grand or so

As i said above, I know sod all about how to take photographs, but I know the techy bits due to work. A couple from MPH in Brum: (I was working for Canon there aswell!)

Personally, I found it a very difficult environment to take pictures in.... pretty dark and loads of different stage lighting.

Sticking a F2.8L 70-200 on my humble 350d, the picture colour and sharpnes are juut so totally unreal compared to any of the other lenses I have used

Light is key to good photos. high quality lenses let more light in and flash guns enable you to manipulate it stopping you getting flat pictures.

for photography of action sequences you will want a prism lens rather than a flip up mirror lens as you will not be able to see the object you are focusing on as you are taking the photo. Personally I believe the Nikon cameras are overpriced for the spec. I have used a few different DSLRs and have found the Canon ones to be more suited to me. The EOS 350D and 400D are great cameras but only have a mirror lens. The 20D has a larger sensor and a prism lens making it a worth the extra money. not sure what the difference was between the 30D and 20D as the spec looked the same.

If you wish to use fisheye lenses; a smaller sensor will dramatically reduce the distortion at the edge of the picture compared to a more expensive DSLR with a full 35mm equivalent sensor size.

What f4 are you going for Jez? 24-105 L? or maybe the 17-40 L

Both stunning bits of glass IMO. I know so many pros who swear by the 24-105

I've got a Pentax K100D with two lens.

18-55mm and a 70-300mm.

Both are wicked lens.

Examples are under VW PhotoShoot 25.11.07 (i think thats the right date)

I think the kit lens on the 400D is ok, well you get what you pay for. Heres some pics taken with the kit lens (18-55mm)
