I'm new and need some advice please.

I Have fitted some 185 60 14" golf alloys on a mk3 polo cl coupe.

They catch on the front arches at the back of the wheel

They only touch an area about 1mm by 40mm.

(same alloys that are on this polo)

There lies your problem.

Lower profile tyres are needed!

i have had a quick look for a set but the lowest i could find were 185 55 14"

i didnt think that would make a lot of difference

You can get 195/45/14, nice low profile tyres:

what sort of price are they. (bit short of cash at the mo, saving for insurance)

its on standard suspension and is quite bouncy. would -15 make much differnce.

The original steels that where on it were 135 70 13".

get some 165/55/14s think they still do them, check mytyres.co.uk

the website above says that the 185's stick out 25mm more.

that explains the rubbing.

how could i stop it?

It's not the fact they are wider that is causing the rubbing, the tyre is too tall for the wheel arch. 195/45s would be better.

would 195/45s go on the alloys ok

Yeah they'll be fine on a 6J wide rim

the wheel catches at the back of the arch (see red arrow on other car)

the lower profile woud not catch?

195 is a bit wide for a 6J rim...I'm thinking of going for some 185/50 R14 Contisports...or something in 185/55...Yoko S-Drive...or trying to find some A539's in 185.

It is a bit wide yes, but the sidewall is pretty much flush with the wheel, and look alright. Plenty of people run 195/45s on 6Js though.

Personally I'd be running the 165/55s because wide tyres on 1.0s are gay, hadn't even thought of 165/55s. That's what you should go for clb.

Yeah, teardrops look good on Polos. They are a nice wheel.

It's just the hassles of getting tyres to fit I'm afraid mate

I might have to stick with the steels for a while maybe give them a coat of paint,

insurance is my main prob. (admiral cheapest was 2260 TP)

14" wheels are a pain for tyres :(

I will have concertarte on passing my test on 2nd January, and to get insurance.

I was thinking of spraying the grill body colour aswell. what you think?

You can get Falken ZE512s in 195/14 14 they're about £45 each. But they're not great tyres. Dunlop, Yokohama and Continental do them in the same size. I didn't find them too wide when I had them fitted.

You can also get 185/50s.
