Title says it all really. My insurance runs out on 10th december and the MOT expired months ago. I need to finsih the car before then so i can drive it to the testing station.

If i dont, then am i right in thining i will have to trailer it? I seem to remember hearing that your insurance is void if you have no MOT, and you can't insure a car without an MOT certificate. AM i right? In which case, with no MOT i can't renew my policy, which means i can't drive it to get it motd. and that means paying for a trailer I'm guessing?

I know this has been asked before but i couldnt find it with the search function.

You can drive a car witout a valid MOT providing it is on its way to a pre-booked test! You can't drive a car on the roads without third party insurance because if you run someone over you need to pay them!

Do you actually need valid MOT to insure the car? I don't recall ever using an MOT certificate except to get the car taxed.

I've NEVER heard of you needing a MOT to get insurance. my dad still insures one of his SORN'ed cars, hasn't had an MOT for ages....

Okay well maybe I'm alright then! None the less, i have a 10 day deadline to rebuild rear axle, fit new front brakes and master cylinder, fit exhaust and realign gearbox... Along with being at uni hehe.

I've never seen in any of my insurance documents anything that says you have to have a valid MOT to be covered. It always just says "the car must be roadworthy". It's a bit of a grey area really. You can drive to an MOT with no tax if the MOT is prebooked. If you fail you can also drive home or to another garage for repair work. If you pass it is then illegal to drive the car without tax so make sure there is a post office that does tax near the MOT station!

I'd get insurance and drive it to the MOT, I've done it before. Just try your best (although no doubt you will anyway) to make sure it's good enough to pass. As I read the insurance thing, as long as your car is in a state where it would pass an MOT then your insurance is OK. Conversely, even if you have an MOT but do something to the car that makes it non-read worthy then insurance have an excuse to not pay out.

Jesus i forgot about the tax! Cheers man! All the more reason to hurry hurry hurry! We are on the way though, i hope to get an hours work in this afternoon to refit suspension at the rear and have the axle on properly. Good call on that one though, thanks a lot man. You always seem to come to the rescue with my mini-dilemmas!

I know it has two holes of rust in the sill, underneath the black plastic GT trim, and I'm not sure if they would pass MOT or not - are the sills structural on mk3's? I hope to get it entirely ready besides that, so that worst case i can get the MOT garage to weld them up for me. Other than that, i will have resolved all the issues i know of before i take it for the test.
