thinking of getting a big black VW badge in the middle of my parcel shelf, with a hole slightly smaller below, which will have a fan in to keep my amps cool!

how would i go about wiring it into the amp so it auto comes on when i turn the headunit on?

also, what parts would i need and where do i get them from?

ok to wire the fan so it comes on with the stereo you will need to use a relay that switches on using the remote wire. this wire will not be capable of running the fan on its own hence the relay which will use a more suitable source of power.

this is a very basic view of the wiring pins on the relay:

- the top pin (the flat one) is the high current input which needs to be powerful enough to run the fan. the power to the amp from the battery will be fine to 't' from.

- the left pin is one side of the trigger coil, the low current input which in this case is your remote wire.

- the right pin is the other side of the coil, in this case its earth so when the remote turns on current flows through the coil and the relay opens.

- the bottom pin is the output which goes to the fan.

once that is done earth the other wire on the fan and you are done.

simple.

You need to use a relay like he said, which powers on through the remote, and you could steal power and ground from the amplifier as well. :)

You can get computer fans off the bay which maybe slightly cheaper and will do the same job, even ones like in the linky above.

If you didnt want to mess about with a relay, you could just take an ignition live. But it will be on all the time that the igniton is on, so it'll put a small drain on the battery (only when the ignition is on of course.)

welli thought about it alot, as my sub is very powerful and points upwards, i dont want it to rattle the fan or break it. so i think might cut a circle in the middle of the shelf, and put a black vw badge over, so it lets air escape/ lets cool air in & more sound :-)

As VWMK3JON said have a look at computer fans as you may be able to get bigger and better ones.

12CM fans can push alot of air if you get the right one. its more about where its used. If you put it in the parcel shelf, the air will of warmed up and just be sitting around the amps still. If you place it as close to the amps as possible you can make better use of the air flow. You could use two, one blowing air over the amp, and one pulling the warm air away.

also you want one blowing in and one blowing out

i have fans ithe the corners of the boot where it vents out behind the bumper one side sucks in nice cold air, the other side blows it out :)
