1.4 16v gearbox VS 1.6 16v gearbox

Featured Replies

Right guys...this is pretty serious, i have no car right now...haven't done so for the past 2 weeks! and i need it back...

What i need to know is the following:

1.) what are the gear ratio differences between the two gearboxes??

2.) Are all of these mk4/mk5 boxes rod change??

3.) what is the likelyhood of me using a 1.4 16v box on my GTI engine until i can fix my GTI box...

pictures, part numbers...anything...please throw it into this topic. The sooner the better folks as i wanna get things rolling asap.

Cheers! Sanjay.

the mk4 16v box is crap! tops out about 122. Not sure on the gti But i'm sure its longer!

What are the codes? I thought the GTi's used an 02x box instead of the 085.

The Mk4 and Mk5 boxes aren't compatible as far as I am aware?

jez should no m8

My bellhousing casing starts with the code 085...so must be an 085 box. I think the mk6+ polo's were all 02x boxes...

this why i need confirmation from those who use autodata, elsa etc etc...

Got the ratios from the Dons over on the uk-polos site:

1.4 16v 100bhp box:

1st: 3.45

2nd: 2.10

3rd: 1.45

4th: 1.10

5th: 0.89

Final drive: 3.88

1.6 16v 125bhp

1st: 3.46

2nd: 2.12

3rd: 1.44

4th: 1.09

5th: 0.89

Final drive: 3.60

So basic differences are in the final drive really!!

Would this 1.4 16v mk5 100bhp box be the same as the mk4 polo then??

Does anyone know that?

are the pedal boxes not different tho? Yeah i think they are for the throttle pedal and the clutch pedal.

As said above drop Jez a pm.

yeah pedal boxes are different but only the throttle pedal mate...all else is the same between the cars!

Only the lupo GTI has hydro clutch so has a different clutch pedal...but this isn't the case.

come on someone...

list up the ratio's for the 1.4 16v 6N!!

Also the boxes should bolt on fine as the bottom ends are identical according to matt pc. :-D

the mk5 polo uses a hydraulic clutch so it wont be combatible unless you swap the master cylinder and pedal assembly, and whoever said the bellhousings are the same is wrong, the late 1.4 and 1.6 16v engines have 2 mounting lugs in slightly different places.

and fyi the mk6 polo uses a 02T gearbox type

if it were even possible to fit it, it would be a pig to drive with longer gearing, the 1.4 doesn't really produce enough torque

skodaboy- where did you get that information dude??

My car uses the GTI engine and box from the mk5...the interior loom is out of a mk4 16v 1.4...and my research shows it DOES NOT use a hydraulic clutch, the pedal box on the GTI is different in the fact that it uses fly by wire (throttle sensors and not cable driven)...

Not entirely certain on the bell housing fact either...where are the lug differences??

The bottom ends on both the 1.4 and 1.6 are identical...the internals are different between the two...so effectively the bell housing casing should be 085 for both.

What is that mk1 or mk3 polo using on its' GTI engine?? :-)

I'm pretty sure a g40 box fits, a mk1 polo AFH is using g40. read it in pvw :D

Does anyone know what the exact faults are on these gearboxes? And don't just reply with "Yeh, they're shit" please

Stick the mk4 box on Sanj mate

Ignore all other BS in the thread.. mk4 box fits straight onto mk5 gti bottom end,

Bet you a quid you will prefer it more than the Gti box as well

is 128 with 185/55/14

think gti box is 137

surely thats speedo speed... not your actual speed

i didn't say it woulsn't fit, it's just slightly different that's all

if it were even possible to fit it

yeah you did!

Mine was with 185/55/14's and it was the limiter in 5th saying 124ish on the speedo. :/ Will a gti box fit on the bottom end of a mk4 valver?

Student

Whats bad about the gti box?

The ratios are better....oh IMO of course

The ratio's are better on what? the gti? or the CWX/mk4 box?

on the AFH

the mk4 box is what test_richie is on about... CWX is one of the boxes fitted to the mk4 AFH
