I agree its all power to weight I've done a couple in my mk1 g40 1 of which was well pi**ed off in traffic on motorway i was behind him giving it large every time we moved a bit then when traffic cleared he thought he was gonna leave me i was holding back every gear until he moved over about 110mph and i blasted past him like he was hardly moving he couldnt even look at us just kept staring straight ahead he was so gutted i was pmsl my ex missus couldnt understand why he couldnt look at us i told her its cos we are in an x reg mk1 polo and hes in a done up r reg wrx sti lol.

Its true.. My old Clio valver (160bhp - 850kg) kept up with my mates scooby till about 130 then mine left it for dead!

Either those subaru`s you guys are racing are fucked or my bro`s old wrx was much more tuned than he thought, I couldnt leave him with my old mk4 polo 20vT (234bhp)

Lol a lot of it is power to weight the mk4 polos are heavier than the mk3 and my mk1 goes about 600 kilos but the rest of it is down to driver experience you can have the fastest car going and still get whipped if you cant drive it right I'm not saying you cant drive right mate but it could just be that your bro is a demon driver if you see what i mean it could also be that your bros scooby was well uprated but a 234bhp polo should whip most scoobys because of power to weight ratio.

We've had two Imprezas and I agree that people think they're much faster than they actually are. We had a bugeyed WRX and that was a fairly quick family car, nowt special tbh, but now we have a 2006 STi which is a properly fast car, with it's 3 LSDs, 280bhp, stiff suspension, sticky bridgestones etc. There are cars that will beat it in a straight line but take it on a nice twisty B-road and nothing will be faster (except a more powerful one :p). Whatever anyone says they are still the ultimate practical performance car, 5 leather seats, decent stereo, fair sized boot.

What people forget is that some of these Imprezas now are 15 years old. They won't be making the 220bhp they made to begin with, more like 200, then take 10bhp for every 'mOD RezistoR cHiP', drainpipe exhaust and cone filtAR.

As mentioned a lot is down to knowing the car and how to drive it.... my dad could do the nurburgring as quick in his Volvo V70 as he could in the Impreza at the moment as he's done 33000 in a year in it, and only about 500 in the impreza!

some of the early scobbies werent even that powerfull, werent the 1st ones around 180 bhp? cos I've out accelerated one of the early ones with ease, never tried a newr scoob for size though, esp after a civic (old,old shape!) driver made mince-meat of me at a set of lights and dual c/way!

Plenty of proffesionally made videos (Best Motoring etc.) from Japan showing Subaru's and Evo's getting a rough time from EK9 Civic (185bhp) and Integra Type R's (200bhp) round circuits and on twisting mountain courses. Then lesser powered cars like the NSX Type R (276bhp) come along and blow them out of the water and go on to anhilate Porsche's and Ferrari's to boot. My favourite video being an AE86 Corolla (170bhp) whooping an R34 Skyline (276bhp) on a twisting country road...well it's acctually a race track...but it's designed like a forest road.

I've been in a near-standard G40 whilst sailing past a WRX Turbo. 2xxbhp is all well in good...but you have to factor in weight and 4-wheel-drive transmission loss as well. All of that power is not making it to the road. Ofcourse nothing to stop you making the Impreza faster...which at the end of the day it can easily be...but then a G40 isn't something that should really challenge these cars as they are in a totally different league.

I like the idea of having a potent car that you can fit four people in and have a decent sized boot...but this all comes at a cost and at the expense of other features such as ride comfort and interior quality. Personally if I wanted family transport with great performance I'd be looking at the performance variations offered by BMW and Audi of their larger cars.

If you can drive a Civic fast then good on you, i'll bet you it's much much more difficult to drive fast than an impreza/equivalent, and factor in a bit of moisture or an uneven surface and 4wd really comes into it's own. Go ahead and buy an Audi A4/A6 or Beemer 3/5 with 280bhp, add leather seats, sat nav etc.... then come back and tell me a) it handles as nicely, grips as well and weighs less and b) cost less than £24500. :p

Not a chance in hell unless you want a 2yr old model. I'd love a BMW 335i.... but £40k! You can't really compare the two in the same way you can't really compare a temprimental 200bhp polo and a factory fresh impreza.

I kept up with a '300bhp' scooby whilst only being able to rev to 4.5k on my safety map (dont worry engine was run in but hadnt been to mapping) with my eaton. Standard cam etc.

They really arent that quick!

I even had a go with a 50bhp evo 8 through shortish straights and did bloody well cos his turbo couldnt spool up quick enough!

I'm not going to stick up for the EP3 Type R that everyone and their mum has (the breadvan shaped thing) rather the hardcore ones from Japan. I just watched a best motoring race at Tsukuba race circuit where an ITR slid up the inside of an Evo and Impreza...niceee.

As for BMW's...I could go an buy one of these...400bhp...damn sight more comfortable than an Impreza, great front engine rear drive handling ballance...what BMW are famous for. £12k...I know which I'd pick...

I'm not saying a Polo is a better car...it is obviously not...I'm just pointing out the fact that a lot of people think Impreza's are the performance holy grail and they really aren't.

good point u made there Tav, i understand what you're saying. of course there are better and quicker cars out there but one of the best classic performance jap cars was the subaru impreza. but there are still some people that think 'jap is crap' which is nonsense lol

I'm not sayin scooby's are the best cars in the world and yeah there are other little cars that keep up until a certain distance. but what people also have to remember is some cars come standard with 300bhp whereas other little cars have to spend quite a bit of cash to get there. but hey, well done to those that keep up with scooby's and cars in the same league

Yup...I like them to an extent...earlier models are nice...when they went to bug eye'd it all went wrong. One of the guys on our local VW forum has a nice JDM Type R...3 door...best shape of the lot I think. It's a shame they are getting cheaper and more accessible to the less decerning motorist now.

that is very true what u said in the last line. there's a couple around my area that treat theirs like crap and constantly boot it around and don't look after em! fair enough the car was made for a little boot here n there but not ALL the time and driving it dangerously!

@ the bug eye shape, god knows what happened there! but some of them in STI's aren't too bad! like this one...

the next shape from that is alot better tho (the blob eye shape). blob eye's in the STI model look mean! the next one up from that (the hawk eye shape) is nice too.......especially the RB320! and then you have the new little scooby.........................no comment

To pick up a classic shape STI is still quite pricey to get for a car of its age. my bro got his one for a good price as the guy only used it as a weekend thing and hardly drove the car! car was completely standard with all import docs and even the receipt for 20 something thousand from whoever bought it brand new! here's a lil pic.........and yes he's going to change the wheels next year for something with a dish!

(we put the clear indicator pack on and added the Blitz Nur Spec cat back exhaust)

Can't stand Scoobys - the noise is horrendous from them, and most (i say most) of the owners are dicks.

But the same goes for most high performance cars - the owners attitudes I mean. At least most proper quick cars sound nice

They are an impressive bit of engineering, especially for the price of them. But so are Evos, and I know what I'd rather have. Certainly wouldn't have a dodgy flat 4 exhaust note!

Maybe if I was to drive an Impreza my views on them would change...

Best Subaru I ever heard was a turbo with equal length manifolds....sounded like a normal car....very unusual.

I saw an EVO FQ360 in the car park at work today...just looking at it...wow...looks so much more hardcore than any Impreza. Woman driver as well, most impressed.

Went round the ring in a Spec-C (equal length manifolds) and it sounded BEEEAUTIFUL.

I'm not keen on the overly loud warble either.

I'm also not keen on the 5k (Yes 5k!) service intervals on the Evos.

Toby, if you drove a new style (06-08) STi your views would change hugely! It's a big step forward from the previous versions IMO.
