I have my car insurance through Adrian Flux.

it is modified car insurance and it currently insured for Social, Domestic, Pleasure & Commuting

I currently drive on a morning from home to my place of work and back everyday

now i am starting a new job in January, and i will be going to a different office 1 day every week.

so for example, on a Monday every week i might be based at Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle ect ect.

but the rest of the week Tue - Friday I would be based in my normal location of Leeds.

so in theory I am only commuting to work everyday, I am not using my car for anything to do with work other than getting there.

so is this classed as commuting?

or is it business mileage? (if so is there different degrees of business mileage?)

I am asking all this because I rang adrian flux, and the woman on the phone didn’t seem to know what I was on about, and she then quoted me £94 extra to upgrade to business use.. yet my policy was only £377 in the first place, so to me this seems ridiculously expensive.

especially when I said it would only collate to 5000 more miles a year than it is currently insured for.

any help would be appreciated.

As long as you go from your door to the workplace (where ever it is located) that is classed as commuting. If however you go to the Leeds office first and then travel to another office, this is classed as business mileage and you won't be insured under a normal policy.

I was in a similar situation - Flux are cheap and often helpful, but you sometimes have to be very firm to make them put someone on the 'phone that actually knows what they're on about. Or give up and ring back hoping you get someone else!

Anyway, I was in a situation where I'd have to commute to an office other than my 'normal' place of work - which was okay by them under the commuting section of the policy. As soon as I mentioned that I'd also be travelling to customer sites then I was told it had to be covered for business use - which work paid for.

just to clarify, i will be leaving my house and going straight to 1 office ... work.. then back home. no stops at other offices or anything, probably just a service station!

You drive from home to one place of work and back every working day - that's commuting.

If you go to another place of work from your regular place of work - that's business use.

If you claim a milage or car user allowance, that is generally business use.

I understand that is that traveling to your normal office of work is commuting, but travelling anywhere else (even straight from home) is business use. I had to get a business use clause on my cars to regain the mileage. it didnt cost me anything extra when I renewed with HIC, but when I first had it added part way though a policy it cost me £25 for the admin cost.

As for different types of business use, there's 4, but not all insurers call them the same thing.

Commerical travelling - I work here on monday, there on tuesday....

Carriage of goods - If you're moving stuff for people

Hire or Reward - Taxi/minicab/airport run

Travelling for the purpose of illicting orders - Tailgating down the motorway in a brand new base spec BMW 316 with the badges taken off, on the phone to a client, typing a memo and picking your nose (this is why sales reps have high insurance premiums).

Don't forget they will also have their headlights and front foglights on in broad daylight on a sunny day because they want to look intimidating to anyone they're tailgating at the time.
