Insurance & Race preping a car

Featured Replies

I just had a bit of a thought and got a few questions.

If i was to use a car on the 1/4 mile strip at santa pod, would i have to tell the insurance?

If i started to take the seats part of the dash etc out of the car to make it lighter will it effect the insurance?

and i take it the normal mods like zorst and induction will depend on the company you are with??

what other paper work is involved with this??

I will also be using the car as my normal road car.

Its best to ring your insurance company as I expect it depends entirely on who you are with

You don't have to tell you insurance but most likely it wont be insured, and if you do tell them then they will most likely tell you they won't cover it.

You policy most likely says:

'Policy does not cover Use for racing, Pacemaking, Speed Testing, Rallies, Trials or Competitions.' So going to santa pod most likely will not be covered. Track days are also another thing thats not normally covered. Some allow it if it is organised by a recognised car club.

If you start stripping stuff out then then again you don't have to tell them but just imagine how it looks if you stack the car and you have no interior or dash, etc. They would surely ask why and then it starts to get messy. Not saying they won't pay out but it could complicate things.

Thinking about it If you are taking out a new policy some companies do ask if the car has been modified from std in any way others ask if the car has been modified to increase top speed or acceleration. So if you strip the car again it could invalidate the insurance.

Talk to competition car insurance. Mine is insured as a road rally car. I can have any mods allowed by the rules without having to declare them, the car is fully comp, and it's also got 3rd party on event cover. The downside is that it's not insured if I'm not sitting in it, or not locked in the garage over night. But this is just my policy. All the people there compete in some form of motorsport.
