Couple more questions; is the flywheel a machined standard item, or not? And what ignition setup is that, I can't see the vacuum advance?

if your fitting carbs maybe megasquirt or megajolt would be a good idea for squeezing the last for horses out?

it sounds preety good aswell good job. most of the hard work you seem to have done so just the ikle bits now good luck :-)

For simplicity, just use the original fuel pump that was on the bike the carbs came off, no worries then!! No return line is used as these carbs have floats therefore the fuel delivery stops when the float is full, much like how your toilet or cold water tank works.

Instead of re-jetting the carbs you can just remove the main jets and make the internal diameter a little bigger with a drill to add more fuel.

just a quick question. i've heard alot about bike carbs recently. what is the advantage of doing this to a car and what cars can it be done to? its good to learn something new! :lol::thumbsup:

i thought fuel on bikes was gravity fed so they didn't use a pump. also what happens when the floats are closed.... surely with a pump there is a pressure build up if there is no return line to the tank.

i'm a bit clueless about carbs on cars so please correct me if i'm wrong.

You are correct in that a pressure build up would occur with a car fuel pump and no return line, this is not the case when using a bike carb pump. Some bikes use gravity fed carbs, but more modern carbed bikes tend to use a fuel pump. The pump will supply fuel until the supply line reaches about 3 psi (not enough to make the float needle valves leak) and at that point the pump will shut off.

GT's with standard ports and inlet manifolds (more restrictive than the carbs and my head) have known to make 96bhp, so, with my less retrictive set up i would like to think anywhere between 100-110bhp is achievable!!

James (the fabricating guru that he is) and myself will be making a 2" exhaust system to help free up a few more horses as there really is nothing available for the mk1. I will be using a PSD 4 branch with a homebrew 2 into 1 section to mate up with the rest of the system. The PSD 4 branch is probably a little overkill for N/A application but it'll sit tighter to the block than any other 4 branch which is what is needed in the mk1's cramped engine bay.

Only time will tell if she reaches my expectations, either way, my old mk3 GT was around the 90bhp mark and that was nippy enough. Add another 10-20bhp to that and take into account the weight difference between the cars (the mk3 at 800kg and the mk1 at 685kg) and you've got a seriously nippy, fun car

I'll suck it and see on the ignition front. I've heard that megasquirt does not advance as well as it could nearer the top end of the rev range which will obviously restrict power! There is another option available from the polo world but it might be a little hard to track down!!

Is this the fully electronic ignition as fitted to the GK powered cars? I see GK ECUs quite often on ebay.de, but as you say, good luck finding the rest of the system!

No, reading it back and not from memory (which is poor these days!) it looks like it was later to be found that it was a coil fault and not the MS causing the lack of advance, my bad.

Still the less technology on the mk1 the better, the whole point of me doing the mk1 was to go back to basics and also to have a break from charged applications, ecu's etc etc

Just got back from tinkering with the old girl again. The throttle cable has been modified to suit so i'm nearly ready for a roadtest.

Just got to mount the fuel pump and fuel filter/regulator, wire up the fuel pump, wire in the mk3 coolant temp sensor, extend the oil pressure switch wire and fit the choke cable. Then all that is left is to fill and bleed the coolant system after finding some more jubilee clips for the hoses and that's about it.

I'll fit the PSD cam as and when i'm happy with the running of it as it is, can't wait 8-)

^ Interested in this also, it doesn't hurt to know more about how it's done on a polo. I am aching to get my twin carbs on, the execution is basically the same in many ways.

It's all up and running and i've driven the old girl home

First off we had her running on the standard cam

and once we had a nice idle and were happy we swapped to one of PSD's finest..

which as you can see, a fair improvement over stock!! The cam gave a slightly lumpy idle but not too bad at all considering

Road test time..........

then disaster struck, the mk1 rad started to leak. James finally found my nissen alu core mk3 rad (ment to find it's way onto my old LregG) so i adapted the rad and the rad fan switch wires etc to make it fit

And then went for a few more runs with no problems to report. I think the 895cc exhaust system is a little bit of a restriction but she goes well

Its not even necessary, its just there to give a little bit more punch and economy under very little throttle

But when the car sounds as good as that the throttle is never gonna be used lightly :lol:

Are you running a brake servo in it? I can't see if you are or not... If so, how did you sort out the breather that leads from the inlet to the servo? Thanks!

also how have you connected the throttle up, what cable did you use?
