basically the 18mm mdf parcel shelf i have really does give off an extreme rattle noise when i put my sub on at a good level.

what can i do to stop this?

i already thought i could cut a massive hole in the middle and put a vw camper van badge painted black to let noise through and get more cold air to the amps.

anything else? puts me off listening to the stereo its that bad.

am also tempted to try it without the shelf for abit untill the matters resolved.

i think the noise is the mdf bending believe it or not.

i popped the soft side of velcro onto the plastic area where the parcel shelf sits!

if it is the MDF flexin, best off with a sound hole, but that will alter the amount of bass you'll hear as the parcel shelf will cancel it out slightly, might be worth putting a couple of bass reflex tubes on either side of the shelf!!!!

I can't see your sub flexing your shelf if it's not secured down! it'll just lift on and off the supports and create a rattle! either velcro it down, or put some rubber on the mounts, old DH mountainbike innertubes or something :)

hmm, well its catch 22.

if i turn it on the shelf rattles, but if i open the boot it doesnt as sub is futher from shelf.

so i cant get a 100% accurate understanding of where the noise is coming from.

i mean, the shelf has weight on it. 2 6x9s in 15mm mdf boxes! bloody heavy.

think i might try going even futher and bolting through!

Ah you didn't say the shelf had speakers in boxes on it! Are you sure it's not the 6*9's making it move?

Try turning it up and sit in the back of the car. You should be able to hold it down so that it doesn't rattle. if that solves it then velcro or bolts are the way to do it. if that's not the case you need to be looking elsewhere. Boot trim etc.

Less redic than the idea of 18mm MDF flexing, and causing a noise while doing so.

Chances are its the shelf being pumped on its mounts by the sub. Don't forget, the boot is quite a sealed enclosure, and the air has to come in and out somewhere.

The best thing would be to start off with a vent of some sort, and then some cushioning of the shelf supports, as has been previously suggested. You might also need to look at things loke number plates, wiper arms, cables etc. All can create unwanted noise.

yeah i know about the other stuff.

vent - big hole in shelf i hope will do the job. rubber on the mounts under the shelf. if it still does it, il bolt the fucker down.

If you bolt it down you might as well do a boot install as you boot wont really be much use with a huge sub and the parcel shelf fixed in place lol

on my car theres little foam bits on the boot to help wedge the shelf down if u used stomething stronger and attached it to the boot when you shut it it would wedge the shelf down so it didnt move.
