Anyone know anything about these ?

I was intending on buying a Mk2 polo COupe S and have my eye on 1 in particular .

I have been told by my father who owns a Mk2 that he thinks a Mk2 GTD would be a better bet but is happy for me to purchase the polo iff i want .

Does anyone know much about these cars ?

How would they compare to a Mk2 Coupe S ?

Haha Scirocco's are just soo cool though i understand why you made that decision .

I understand Golf GTD's can be tuned to 150Bhp not bad for a 1.6 aye ..

WOuld you say that would be as quick as a 16v Gti then ? Iff so thats imense for what they are ..

Faster than what? In standard form, they're fairly slow.

They're reliable, they look the part, and they're good on fuel, but fast they're not.

I have been told they can be fairly easily tuned to 150Bhp .

Tbh I'm not really going to be able to use any sort of power as i will have to be very careful when i get my licence back i was just plesantly suprised that it would be there for such cituations that i maywell need it .

It would also make motorway driving a bit more fun . Less pedal to the metal ..

They are good cars but quite rare as not many people bought them. I've been on the lookout for one for a while but whenever i find one it always seems to be in Scotland!

They have around 80hp, although apparently the later ones have more than that, I'm not so sure. I'm also not sure about getting 150bhp out of them, not with the old school diesel technology they have. They don't even have an ecu unless I'm very much mistaken. You might be able to do it with a really big turbo/bigger injectors and some other mods, but I doubt you'll want to spend the amont of money required. I've seen them converted to the later 1.9 TDI engines with 90/110hp. These remap to 120/145ish respectively. A cheaper alternative I would imagine.

They do enjoy smoking, the ones i have seen anyway, you would need to clean the backend everyday.

Tuning a GTD involves a screwdriver and spanner if it's anything like the mechanical injection on my Discovery

Fuel pump and compressor boost maxed out will make a massive difference in power IIRC.

There is a thread on ed38 on tuning GTD's and you can get around 150bhp out of them.

I would have one over my 1.8 driver if I could find a decent one around cos of the fuel economy

the fat stig and blootak on here both are dirty durka GTD's although stiggies is labelled up as a Golf CL apparently from factory.

both of them are cool as fook, cost nothing to drive anywhere, i wouldnt go buying them for out and out speed because its not a fast machine, but its got enough torque to help you move nicely along the motorway and you can do it in relative cheapness, plus youve got a james bondesque smoke screen, drop it into 3rd and boot it and black smoke covers all in your wake!

The GTD is essentially a MK2 Golf Driver diesel in all but name. Early ones had a non-intercooled 1.6 putting out 80bhp and the later ones got a Mk2 Golf GTI G60 style intercooler setup added, putting out 90bhp iirc.

GTDs are 80 bhp standard according to my manual. 13.2 seconds to 60, and top speed of 106 mph. All manual figures though...

bigger turbo, second inter cooler and some little tweeks and they can get off the line quicker than a scooby...

or so i was told by some lad at a meet

but they are meant to be easily tuned with surprising results.

I've seen that car in the flesh and that would have been the sort I was after very good condition a really nice package.

Sorry about not putting faster than what, I meant the 1.8 petrol, even on a webber carb the GTD will pull away.

I also heard they are supposed to give the 1.8 GTI a good run for it's money but whether it will be as nippy off the mark I don't know.

Ahh yes i have been told to look for the later engine code .

By the sound of things and through looking for one over the past few days it isnt going to be easy to find a nice one as i dont want to do a shitter up id rather buy something mint and standard .. well OEM .
